What are the causes for accomplishing each and every thing? Because they are perfectly complete, these names are truly accomplished. This means that 'this' refers to the Sambhogakaya. By becoming familiar with and practicing the causes of each and every name, those names will become perfectly complete. Powers, fearlessness, and so on are qualities of the mind, and therefore are very subtle. Therefore, the meaning is that the thirty-two major marks alone determine the Sambhogakaya. Regarding what are the causes for obtaining the names, it is said: 'Sending forth the guru and so on, showing the taking up of the right, relying on gathering, giving abundant objects, liberating what is to be killed, and virtue, increasing the taking up of the right, and so on, are the characteristics of the cause of accomplishment, as it appears in the sutras.' The meaning of that is this: sending forth the gurus and again going forth to meet them, listening to the Dharma, making offerings of flower garlands and so on, offering retinues, making prostrations and so on to stupas and so on, therefore the palms of the hands and soles of the feet are marked with wheels. Because of being steadfast in the yidam of Dharma practice, the feet are well-placed, like tortoise feet. Because of generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and acting in accordance with the Dharma, the fingers and toes are connected by webs. Because of giving excellent food and drink, the hands and feet are soft and have the complexion of youth, and the seven high places of the body are also due to this. Because of liberating those who are bound, the fingers are long. Because of protecting life, the heels of the feet are broad. Because of turning back from killing, the body is large and upright. Because of regarding the roots of virtue as yidams, the ankles of the feet are not visible. Because of diligently studying the taking up of virtue, the body hairs grow upwards. The meaning included by the word 'and so on' should be explained, because of giving offerings and the reasoning of arts and so on, therefore the giving is like the king of deer, Eṇeya. Because of having wealth and not turning away when beggars come, the arms are long. Placing all beings in pure conduct, and protecting the secret

It is the excellence of being hidden in a secret place. Because of giving abundant cushions, the skin color is like pure gold. Because of giving excellent dwellings, the skin is thin. Because of completely abandoning noisy places, each hair grows to the right. Because of abiding in the state of the Lama or superiors, the face is adorned with beautiful hair. Because of completely abandoning harsh speech in all ways, the upper body is like a lion. Because of speaking pleasant words and conforming words, the arms are round. Because of giving medicine and so on, the shoulders are full. Because of serving the sick, even unpalatable things appear as excellent delicacies. Because of giving pleasant forests and gardens and so on, the body is like a banyan tree, covering the width of the water. Because of giving particularly excellent temples and so on, the crown of the head is raised again. Because of speaking gentle words and so on, the tongue is long and beautiful. Because all sentient beings in the world know the Dharma, they have the voice of Brahma. Because of turning away from idle talk, they have lion's cheeks. Because of having true thoughts for all beings, the teeth are very white. Because of living a truly pure life, the teeth are even. Because of always practicing true speech, the teeth are close together. Because of not being accustomed to divisive speech, there are forty teeth. Because of seeing all sentient beings as only children, the eyes are long. Because of turning away from anger and so on, the eyelashes are like excellent things. Thus, the thirty-two marks of a great person with causes are shown. Now, in order to show the eighty minor marks, it is said: The nails of the Buddha are copper-colored, the color is smooth and high, the fingers are round and full, the joints are slender, the veins are not visible, there are no knots, the ankles are not visible, the soles of the feet are flat, like a lion, elephant, bird, like a king of cows, walking to the right, walking upright and gracefully, like being wiped clean, in proper order, the body is clean, soft, and white, the limbs of the body are wide and beautiful, the steps are steady, the eyes are pure, with a very young color, the body is not shrunken and full, the body is very tight, the limbs are extremely
