DTG087 0008.Explanation of the Fifth Chapter.g2.0f

English

At that time, it will definitely never change. The four antidotes are established by reversing the antidotes that abandon this and that. The sound called "the conceptualization of the apprehended" is to be understood as the conceptualization of the apprehended in order to refute the possibility of superimposing on the object. The so-called "for the sake of affliction" means "for the sake of conceptualization." If one thinks that conceptualization is one, how can it be nine? It has already been said above that "by the difference of objects." This fifth one is connected as a reason. The so-called "by engaging without being related to things," things refer to those with names, that is, the objects of how to recognize. The so-called unrelated, if those things existed as observed, then at that time they would also become related, but because they do not exist, they are unrelated, therefore, the so-called unrelated, this shows that the four conceptualizations are merely non-existent. The so-called "by engaging," just like someone who, because of eating the Datura flower, engages without any basis, like taking a golden needle in the sky. Therefore, in terms of the uninterrupted path, it shows the wisdom of abandoning the baseless inversion. Taking ordinary beings as objects, clinging to the fact that the person is substantially existent, and taking noble beings as objects, clinging to the fact that they are nominally existent, thus connecting the apprehended and the apprehender. Among them, those ordinary beings are called persons, that is, following the worldly fame.

Even someone who insists on the path, merely through clinging to names, can infer the existence of noble beings. Some might wonder how these could become incompatible opposites. When those objects of experience, the objects to be grasped, whether ordinary beings or noble beings, should be regarded as merely imputed as they are. Because they do not exist in the nature of the object, the reason should be established in this way. First, in explaining the meaning of prostration, by means of measures such as one and many, it is shown that things do not exist substantially. By meditating on the meaning of emptiness in this way, neither samsara nor nirvana are established even as mere illusions. So how could the conceptual minds that grasp at these, the possessors of objects, possibly be established? This is his thought. Some here say: If the meaning to be grasped has no self-nature, then by whom are they grasped? Therefore, those who grasp, their nature is the characteristic of emptiness. This passage considers the eighteen conceptual minds to be grasped as objects, and the eighteen conceptual minds that grasp as possessors of objects, thus establishing the two types of conceptual minds as object and possessor of object. These people have not understood the meaning at all. To refute this, the teacher said "should be grasped," that is, the previously mentioned "conceptual mind to be grasped." If it is a fault to think that even noble beings are merely nominally existent, then nirvana is also like an illusion, like a dream. If there is some dharma that is even more excellent than nirvana, that is also like an illusion, like a dream. How is this so? This is in reference to the consciousness that is not in equipoise, and the manifestation of clinging is very subtle. In the state of equipoise, even conceptual minds that are like illusions must be prevented. Because if there is no movement of the mind, why even mention letters? And so on, he said. How are there nine kinds? And so on, this shows the arising of conceptual minds that depend on each basis, as previously explained, and it is easy to understand. What are those causes? The first cause is to combine with the path of seeing, etc., in order to enable beings to attain enlightenment.

End. The second is to explain the Prajñāpāramitā in order to increase the path of seeing that has arisen through the path of meditation. The third is to meditate on the meaning of the Mother of the Conquerors in order to ensure enlightenment and thereby cause a great many beings to become enlightened. The uninterrupted cause is the actual cause of the Buddha himself, and by remembering it, not only will I alone attain enlightenment, but all sentient beings, who are far more numerous than myself, will also attain enlightenment. This should be combined. The reason for showing this path of seeing as the cause of great enlightenment is that it is the main part of the cause. The path of meditation is also determined by it, and heat and so on are only for that purpose. Causes and effects do not exist in the ultimate sense, because they have not been proven by valid cognition, etc. This should be combined. The "etc." means that the scriptures with definite meaning should be included. Others think that valid cognition is the reasoning that establishes validity, and "etc." refers to the other three reasonings and the scriptures. The Dharmakāya, etc., refers to all four bodies, because they are completely free from the stains of delusion, so they are the nature of suchness. The word "is" indicates the meaning of "because" or "only that." The phrase "because it is so, therefore it is so" means that the nature of the Dharmadhātu is like the sky, without arising or ceasing, or that it is shown only by the power of this reasoning of the Dharma nature, because the Dharmadhātu has no end and no arising, so your view is unreasonable. "The nature of one and many," etc., when saying "the reasoning that establishes validity is so," it means that this reasoning will harm you, so it is said. Some people think that cause and effect are determined by the valid cognition of dependent origination, and "etc." refers to reasonings like the Vajra Splinter, and the negation of arising from the four extremes, etc. Those who say that the Arhats have ceased, and those who only speak of consciousness
