Wishing for the grounds of the Hearers and the grounds of the Solitary Buddhas, thinking that these are different from my discipline. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who thus understands practices the Perfection of Discipline. For the sake of those sentient beings, he does not generate a mind of anger even when constantly reviled and beaten with harsh words and violence. He does not generate a mind of hatred even when struck and beaten with stones, sticks, and weapons, or when his limbs are cut off, or his hands and feet are severed. Why is that? Because he understands that all sounds are like echoes. He understands that all forms are like bubbles. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who thus understands practices the Perfection of Patience. For the sake of those sentient beings, he does not generate a mind of laziness in order to completely seek all roots of virtue. Why is that? Because he thinks like this: Even being born in the heavens is difficult for the lazy to obtain, what need is there to mention Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment? Therefore, from now until I manifest Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment and become a Buddha, I shall exert diligence. I shall constantly not abandon diligence. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who thus understands practices the Perfection of Diligence. For the sake of those sentient beings, he is not distracted. Why is that? Because he thinks like this: Even being born in worldly concentration is difficult for those with distracted minds to obtain, what need is there to mention Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment? Therefore, from now until I manifest Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment and become a Buddha, I shall not let my mind be distracted. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who thus understands practices the Perfection of Concentration. For the sake of those sentient beings, when will he manifest Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment?

Until perfect enlightenment, one will never be separated from wisdom. Why is that? It is because one thinks like this: without engaging in the perfection of wisdom, one cannot fully mature sentient beings in any other way. Therefore, I should not generate even a little bit of mind that is contrary to wisdom. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has fully realized this, practices the perfection of wisdom for the benefit of sentient beings. The question: Bhagavan, if there is no difference among the perfections, then why is this perfection of wisdom called the best of the five perfections? Why is it called the chief? Why is it called the supreme? Why is it called the sacred? Why is it called the excellent? Why is it called the abundant? Why is it called the unsurpassed? Why is it called the incomparable? Why is it called the unequaled? Why is it called the unequal and equal? The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, it is just so, it is just so. Subhuti, there is indeed no difference among the perfections. If there were no perfection of wisdom, then these five perfections would not even obtain the name of perfection. It is by relying on the perfection of wisdom that these five perfections also obtain the name of perfection. Subhuti, for example, different bodies, when they go to the foot of Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains, become one color. Subhuti, similarly, by relying on the perfection of wisdom, these five perfections obtain the name of perfection. They also go to omniscience, and in this way, they become one color in the color of omniscience. This is the perfection of generosity, this is the perfection of ethics, this is the perfection of patience, this is the perfection of diligence, this is the perfection of meditation, this is the perfection of wisdom, there is no difference whatsoever. Why is that? It is because it is without inherent existence, therefore there is no difference.

There is no difference. Asked: Blessed One, if there is no difference or distinction in following the meaning, then why is the Perfection of Wisdom said to be the most excellent of those five perfections? The chief? The supreme? The sacred? The excellent? The rich? The unsurpassed? The incomparable? The unequaled? The unequal and equal? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is so. It is so, there is no difference or distinction in any dharma for the sake of attaining the meaning. However, relying on worldly conventions and established terms, for the sake of completely liberating sentient beings from samsara, there is also the Perfection of Generosity, the Perfection of Discipline, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Meditation, and the Perfection of Wisdom. For those sentient beings, there is neither birth, nor death, nor transference, nor arising. Since there are no sentient beings, all dharmas should be understood as non-existent. Subhuti, therefore, the Perfection of Wisdom is said to be the most excellent of these five perfections, the chief, the supreme, the sacred, the excellent, the rich, the unsurpassed, the incomparable, the unequaled, the unequal and equal. Subhuti, for example, Among all the women in Jambudvipa, the jewel woman is the most excellent, the chief, the supreme, the sacred, the excellent, the rich, the unsurpassed, the incomparable, the unequaled, the unequal and equal. Asked: Blessed One, how is it understood that the Perfection of Wisdom is the most excellent, the chief, the supreme, the sacred, the excellent, the rich, the unsurpassed, the incomparable, the unequaled, the unequal and equal? The Blessed One said: Good
