Venerable Subhuti asked: "Bhagavan, will a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva be predicted to attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi because of the non-arising of all dharmas?" The Bhagavan said: "Subhuti, it is not so." He asked: "Bhagavan, will a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva be predicted to attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi because of arising?" The Bhagavan said: "Subhuti, it is not so." He asked: "Bhagavan, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is not predicted to attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi because of non-arising, nor because of arising, then how will a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva be predicted to attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi?" The Bhagavan said: "Subhuti, what do you think? Have you truly seen such a dharma that will be predicted to attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi?" He asked: "Bhagavan, I have not. Bhagavan, I have not truly seen those dharmas that will be predicted to attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi. Bhagavan, I have not truly seen such dharmas by which one attains perfect enlightenment, with which one attains perfect enlightenment, and upon which one attains perfect enlightenment." The Bhagavan said: "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Because of not fixating on all dharmas, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not think, 'I will attain perfect enlightenment, with this I will attain perfect enlightenment, upon this I will attain perfect enlightenment.' Why is that? Subhuti, because when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom in this way, all discriminations are extinguished. Why is that? Subhuti, the Perfection of Wisdom is called non-discrimination, which is the fourth augmentation." Then, Indra, the Lord of the Gods, to the Bhagavan

Thus he requested. "Bhagavan, the Perfection of Wisdom is profound for the sake of being utterly secluded. It is difficult to see. It is difficult to realize. It is inconceivable. It is not the domain of thought. It is peaceful, subtle, and refined. It is to be realized by the wise and intelligent. Bhagavan, those sentient beings who listen to, hold, retain, recite, and fully comprehend this profound Perfection of Wisdom, and who diligently apply themselves to it as it is, and who, until they are perfectly and completely awakened to unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, do not understand the mind and other phenomena arising from the mind, those are not beings endowed with roots of virtue. The Bhagavan said: "Kauśika, it is just so. It is just so. Those sentient beings who listen to, hold, retain, recite, and fully comprehend this profound Perfection of Wisdom, and who diligently apply themselves to it as it is, and who, until they are perfectly and completely awakened to unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, do not understand the mind and other phenomena arising from the mind, those are not beings endowed with roots of virtue. Kauśika, what do you think? If all the sentient beings in Jambudvipa were to be endowed with the path of the ten virtuous actions, were to possess the four concentrations, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, and the five supernormal cognitions, and if any son or daughter of good family were to hold, retain, recite, and fully comprehend this Perfection of Wisdom, having held and retained it, having recited and fully comprehended it, and were to diligently apply themselves to it as it is, then, Kauśika, the former root of virtue would not even approach a hundredth part of this root of virtue, not even a thousandth part, a hundred thousandth part, a hundred thousand millionth part, nor would it be comparable in number, part, calculation, example, or cause. Then, a certain monk said to the Lord of the Gods, Indra: "Kauśika, the sentient beings of Jambudvipa who are endowed with the path of the ten virtuous actions, who are endowed with the four concentrations, the four immeasurables,

And possessing the four formless absorptions, and possessing the five superknowledges. All those sons or daughters of good family who, with an undistracted mind, hold, retain, recite, comprehend, and properly attend to this profound Perfection of Wisdom, and who diligently apply themselves to suchness, until they awaken to unsurpassed and perfect complete enlightenment, without distinguishing between mind and other mental phenomena, those ones will be overwhelmed. Having spoken thus, the lord of the gods, Indra, said this to that monk: "Monk, all those sentient beings of Jambudvipa who possess the path of the ten virtuous actions, possess the four dhyanas, possess the four immeasurables, possess the four formless absorptions, and possess the five superknowledges, even one Bodhisattva Mahasattva who has generated the mind endowed with all-aspects-knowing will overwhelm them. What need is there to mention those who hold, retain, recite, comprehend, and properly attend to this profound Perfection of Wisdom, and having held and retained it, and having recited and comprehended it, diligently apply themselves to suchness? Needless to say, they will overwhelm the world including gods, humans, and asuras, and that Bodhisattva Mahasattva will overwhelm and surpass the world including gods, humans, and asuras. That Bodhisattva Mahasattva not only overwhelms and surpasses the world including gods, humans, and asuras, but that Bodhisattva Mahasattva will also overwhelm and surpass all those stream-enterers, once-returners, non-returners, arhats, and solitary realizers. Not only stream-enterers, once-returners, non-returners, arhats, and solitary realizers, but that Bodhisattva Mahasattva is a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Giving.
