The saying, "This is the Bodhisattva Mahasattva," is a conceptualization of being universally ignorant of the knowledge of the path. Subhuti asked: "For what reason, Blessed One, is the omniscience of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, 'all' refers to these internal and external self-natured dharmas. All of these are known by the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, but not by all paths, nor by all aspects." The saying, "not by all aspects," is a conceptualization of being universally ignorant of omniscience. Asked: "Blessed One, what is it? Does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the path and directly realize Suchness?" The Blessed One said: "No." Asked: "Blessed One, then does he abide in the non-path?" The Blessed One said: "No." Asked: "Then does he abide in both the path and the non-path?" The Blessed One said: "No." Asked: "Blessed One, then does he abide in neither the path nor the non-path?" The Blessed One said: "No." Asked: "Blessed One, then how does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva directly realize Suchness?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, what do you think? By abiding in the path, is your mind liberated from the outflows without attachment?" Asked: "Blessed One, it is not." The Blessed One said: "Then do you abide in the non-path?" Asked: "Blessed One, it is not." The Blessed One said: "Then do you abide in what is both the path and the non-path?" Asked: "Blessed One, it is not." The Blessed One said: "Then do you abide in what is neither the path nor the non-path, and is your mind liberated from the outflows without attachment?" Asked: "Blessed One, it is not. Blessed One, my mind is not liberated from the outflows without attachment because it abides in anything. Blessed One, my mind is liberated because it does not abide in anything." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, likewise, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva"

One should not abide in anything and realize the true limit. Subhuti, that which is called "all-knowingness, all-knowingness" is called all-knowingness in one way, that is, it is called all-knowingness in the way of peace. Subhuti, in this way, the Tathagata has realized the ways, signs, and characteristics by which the dharmas are expressed, and therefore it is called all-knowingness. Question: Blessed One, is there any difference between the three kinds of all-knowingness, namely, all-knowingness, knowledge of the path, and all-knowingness, in that the aspect of abandoning afflictions has completely abandoned the remainder, or that it has not completely abandoned the remainder? The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, there is no difference in abandoning afflictions, but the Tathagata has the ability to abandon all habitual connections. The Hearers and Solitary Buddhas have not abandoned all habitual connections. Question: Blessed One, what is the reason? Have those Hearers and Solitary Buddhas abandoned afflictions without having practiced and attained them? The Blessed One replied: That is not so. Question: Blessed One, what is the reason? Is there any particularity in non-practice? The Blessed One replied: That is not so. Question: Blessed One, if there is no particularity in that way, then why do you say that this one has the ability to abandon habitual connections, and this one has not abandoned habitual connections? The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, habitual connections are not afflictions, but Hearers and Solitary Buddhas have bodily and verbal actions of desire, hatred, and ignorance. Those habitual connections are common to all ordinary people, but they do not cause harm. However, the Tathagatas, Arhats, and Perfectly Awakened Ones do not possess or cling to anything in all aspects and in all circumstances.

So. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if there is no path and no nirvana, then why is it said, 'This is a stream-enterer, this is a once-returner, this is a non-returner, this is an Arhat, this is a Pratyekabuddha, this is a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, this is a Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha'?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, the terms stream-enterer, once-returner, non-returner, Arhat, Pratyekabuddha, Bodhisattva Mahasattva, and Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha, all these are distinctions made within the unconditioned." He asked: "Blessed One, why is it that the unconditioned is distinguished as stream-enterer, once-returner, non-returner, Arhat, Pratyekabuddha, Bodhisattva Mahasattva, and Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, although there are no distinctions in the unconditioned, it is spoken of using conventional terms as a measure, but ultimately no distinctions can be made. Why? Because there is no designation of a path of words in it. However, whatever has not been exhausted, a later limit is designated for those. Subhuti, since all dharmas are empty of their own nature, if the former limit is not perceived, how can the later limit be perceived? There is no such place. Subhuti, because those beings do not believe that dharmas are empty of their own nature, it is said to them, 'This is the former limit,' and 'This is the later limit.' For all dharmas that are empty of their own nature, neither a former limit nor a later limit can be perceived. Subhuti, in this way, since all dharmas are empty of their own nature, one should practice the Perfection of Wisdom, for all dharmas that are empty of their own nature.
