Those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who seek to attain the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment are practicing austerities. Why is that? Blessed One, there is no such thing as abiding in Suchness. There is also no attainment of Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment. There is also no one who teaches the Dharma. Nevertheless, they do not become discouraged, disheartened, or confused. Then, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Lord of the Gods, Indra: Kauśika, what you said earlier, Blessed One, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas do not become disheartened or confused by these profound Dharmas, is practicing austerities. Kauśika, if all Dharmas are emptiness, then who is there to become disheartened or confused? Indra said: Venerable Subhuti, whatever you teach, it is all based on emptiness and you teach without attachment to anything. Just as an arrow shot into the sky has no attachment to anything. Similarly, the Dharma taught by Venerable Subhuti has no attachment to anything. Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, is it the case that by saying this and expressing it in this way, I am following the words of the Blessed One, following the Dharma, and being prophesied with the true nature of Dharma that is guarded by Dharma? The Blessed One replied: Kauśika, by saying this and expressing it in this way, you are following the words of the Tathagata, expressing it as Dharma, and being prophesied with the nature of Dharma that is guarded by Dharma. Indra said: Blessed One, whatever the Venerable Subhuti proclaims, it is all based on emptiness, based on signlessness, based on wishlessness, and based on the perfection of generosity, based on the perfection of morality.

and the perfection of generosity, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, have begun and are full of confidence. Inner emptiness has begun and is full of confidence. Between the emptiness of the nature of non-things, they have begun and are full of confidence. The four mindfulnesses have begun and are full of confidence. The four right abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path have begun and are full of confidence. The four noble truths, the meditations, the immeasurables, and the formless absorptions have begun and are full of confidence. The liberations, the successive abidings, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, the superknowledges, the samadhis, and the doors of dharani have begun and are full of confidence. The powers of the Tathagata, the fearlessnesses, the individual perfect knowledges, and the unmixed qualities of the Buddha have begun and are full of confidence. Until the all-knowingness has begun and is full of confidence, it is truly wonderful! The Blessed One said: Kausika, Venerable Subhuti, since one does not perceive the perfection of generosity by practicing emptiness, what need is there to say about practicing the perfection of generosity? Since one does not perceive the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, what need is there to say about practicing the perfection of wisdom? Since one does not perceive inner emptiness, what need is there to say about meditating on inner emptiness? Since one does not perceive between the emptiness of the nature of non-things, what need is there to say about meditating between the emptiness of the nature of non-things?
