is said to be a perfectly enlightened Buddha. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, the stream-enterer, the once-returner, the non-returner, the Arhat, the Pratyekabuddha, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, and the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha, all of these are distinguished up to the realm of the unconditioned. He asked: Blessed One, what is the unconditioned? This is the stream-enterer, this is the once-returner, this is the non-returner, this is the Arhat, this is the Pratyekabuddha, this is the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, this is the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha. Is there a distinction to be made? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, although there is no distinction in the unconditioned, yet speech is used as a measure and expression, but in the ultimate sense, it cannot be distinguished. Why is that? Because there is no designation of the path of speech there. However, it is those things that have not been determined that are given a later limit. Subhuti, if all dharmas are empty of their own nature, then the former limit is not perceived, how can the later limit be perceived? It is impossible because there is no place to stand. Subhuti, those sentient beings who do not understand that dharmas are empty of their own nature, it is said to them: This is the former limit, this is the latter limit. For all dharmas that are empty of their own nature, the former and latter limits are not perceptible. Subhuti, therefore, all dharmas are empty of their own nature, so one should practice the Perfection of Wisdom. If one practices all dharmas that are empty of their own nature, then one will not become attached to any of the internal or external dharmas, conditioned or unconditioned dharmas, the dharmas of the Hearers, the dharmas of the Pratyekabuddhas, or the dharmas of the Buddhas. When he had said this, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, why is the Perfection of Wisdom called the Perfection of Wisdom?

The Blessed One said: Subhuti, this Perfection of Wisdom is the attainment of the supreme perfection of all dharmas, therefore it is called the Perfection of Wisdom. Furthermore, Subhuti, this Perfection of Wisdom causes all Sravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, and Tathagata-Arhat-Samyaksambuddhas to attain the perfection of all dharmas. It is the perfection that leads to perfection, therefore it is called the Perfection of Wisdom. Furthermore, Subhuti, this Perfection of Wisdom distinguishes all dharmas in the most excellent manner, yet it does not observe samsara in any of those dharmas, therefore it is called the Perfection of Wisdom. Such is called the discrimination of being completely deluded on the path. Furthermore, Subhuti, this Perfection of Wisdom also includes suchness, also includes the limit of reality, and also includes the realm of dharma, therefore it is called the Perfection of Wisdom. Furthermore, Subhuti, this Perfection of Wisdom is not endowed with any dharma, nor is it without, nor is it demonstrable, nor is it undemonstrable, nor is it obstructive, nor is it unobstructed. Why is that? Thus, this Perfection of Wisdom is formless, undemonstrable, without characteristics, with non-characteristic as its characteristic. Such is called the discrimination of being completely deluded about possessing or not possessing suchness and so on. Furthermore, Subhuti, this Perfection of Wisdom generates all courage and all appearances of all dharmas. Furthermore, Subhuti, this Perfection of Wisdom is not cut off or stolen by demons or gods of the demonic host, or by individuals of the Sravaka or Pratyekabuddha vehicle, or even by other heretics, or by evil friends. Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas are also unable to cut off this Perfection of Wisdom. Why is that? Thus, because of the emptiness of its own nature, all of them have no object of focus in this Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, thus
