They do not do that; otherwise, those roots of virtue are made common to all sentient beings and are dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Just like that, they dedicate without engaging the three concepts of how one dedicates, what one dedicates, and where one dedicates. Subhuti, in this way, the bodhisattva mahasattva dwells in the perfection of diligence and fully upholds the perfection of ethics. Question: Blessed One, how does the bodhisattva mahasattva dwell in the perfection of diligence and fully uphold the perfection of patience? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, in this case, from the time the bodhisattva mahasattva generates the first thought until he sits near the essence of enlightenment, if he is disturbed in mind by a human or non-human being, or if all his limbs are cut off, severed, taken away, and discarded, even then, the bodhisattva mahasattva who dwells in the perfection of diligence does not think, 'What has been cut off, severed, or taken away from me?' Otherwise, he thinks, 'Those who have perfected my body come here, and by cutting off, severing, taking away, and discarding limbs, I have obtained what I should obtain well.' This is also a good recollection of the nature of all phenomena, and those roots of virtue are not dedicated to the ground of the hearers or the self-enlightened ones. Otherwise, they are made common to all sentient beings and dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Just like that, they dedicate without engaging the three concepts of how one dedicates, what one dedicates, and where one dedicates.

Napa Yongsu Tzinpa. The Blessed One said: Rabjor, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, desiring solitude, solitude from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, having approached and abided in the first dhyana, which is born of solitude and endowed with joy and pleasure. Having pacified initial application and sustained application, with inner purity, the continuum of mind becoming one, having approached and abided in the second dhyana, which is born of samadhi without initial application and sustained application and endowed with joy and pleasure. Having become detached from joy, abiding in mindfulness and with awareness in equanimity, experiencing pleasure with the body, the noble ones say of that one, 'Mindful, contemplating pleasure, is equanimity.' Having approached and abided in the third dhyana, which is without joy. Having abandoned pleasure and abandoned suffering, and with the previous mental pleasure and displeasure having ceased, there is neither pleasure nor suffering, having approached and abided in the fourth dhyana, which is completely purified by equanimity and mindfulness. Having taken to heart the perception of happiness for sentient beings, having approached and abided in immeasurable loving-kindness. Having taken to heart the perception of freedom from suffering for sentient beings, having approached and abided in immeasurable compassion. Having taken to heart the perception of joy for sentient beings, having approached and abided in immeasurable joy. Having taken to heart the perception of neither suffering nor happiness for sentient beings, having approached and abided in immeasurable equanimity. Having taken to heart the perception of form as coarse and the perception of space as peaceful, having approached and abided in the sphere of infinite space. Having taken to heart the perception of space as coarse and the perception of consciousness as peaceful, having approached and abided in the sphere of infinite consciousness. Having taken to heart the perception of consciousness as coarse and the perception of nothingness as peaceful, having approached and abided in the sphere of nothingness.

He abides, having attained the Station of Neither Perception Nor Non-Perception, by giving attention to the idea of it. He does not fully accept the ripening of those absorptions of dhyana, immeasurables, and the formless, but instead, for the sake of doing what is good for sentient beings, he is born in those states, and he fully matures those sentient beings in the perfection of giving, the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of vigor, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, those six perfections. For the purpose of generating roots of virtue, he attends upon and honors the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and goes from Buddha-field to Buddha-field. He also makes those roots of virtue common with all sentient beings, and dedicates them completely to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, but he does not dedicate them to the Hearers and Solitary Realizers. He dedicates them in such a way that the three concepts of "how," "by whom," "what is dedicated," and "to where it is dedicated" do not occur. Subhuti, in that way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of vigor and fully upholds the perfection of meditation. He asked: Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the perfection of vigor and fully uphold the perfection of wisdom? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of vigor, and with respect to the perfection of giving, he does not truly see things, entities, or signs; with respect to the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of vigor, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, he does not truly see things, entities, or signs. With respect to inner emptiness, he does not truly see things, entities, or signs; with respect to outer-inner emptiness, he does not truly see things, entities, or signs.
