will not become enlightened. Even by generating a subsequent mind, one will not manifest complete perfect enlightenment into unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment. Even without relying on generating a subsequent mind, one will not manifest complete perfect enlightenment into unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment; rather, one will manifest complete perfect enlightenment into unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment. This is answered with the example of ghee. The questioner asks: Blessed One, in this way, even by generating the first mind, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not manifest complete perfect enlightenment into unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment; and even without relying on generating the first mind, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not manifest complete perfect enlightenment into unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment; and even without generating a subsequent mind, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not manifest complete perfect enlightenment into unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment; and even without relying on not generating a subsequent mind, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not manifest complete perfect enlightenment into unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment. Blessed One, that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva manifests complete perfect enlightenment into unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment, this profound dependent arising is truly wondrous! The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think that what has ceased will arise again? The questioner asks: Blessed One, that is not so; this is called profound arising. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think that what has arisen has the nature of ceasing? Subhuti answered: Blessed One, it has the nature of ceasing. The Sugata has the nature of ceasing. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Will that which has the nature of ceasing cease? The questioner asks: Blessed One, that is not so; this is called profound ceasing. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Will that which is Suchness, as it is, abide as it is? The questioner asks: Blessed One, it is so.

will remain just as it is in suchness. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is that which remains just as it is in suchness permanent? He replied: Blessed One, it is not. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is suchness profound? He replied: Blessed One, it is profound. What the Thus-Gone One calls profound is the profoundness of suchness. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is suchness mind? He replied: Blessed One, it is not. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is there mind other than suchness? Subhuti replied: Blessed One, it is not, this is the profound knowable. The Blessed One said: Does suchness truly see suchness? He replied: Blessed One, it does not, this is profound knowledge. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Does one who acts in that way act in the profound perfection of wisdom? He replied: Blessed One, one who acts in that way acts in the profound perfection of wisdom. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? In what does one who acts in that way act? He replied: Blessed One, one who acts in that way does not act in anything. Why is that? Blessed One, in this way, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva acts in the perfection of wisdom and abides in suchness, these elaborations do not arise and do not circulate. Why is that? Blessed One, there is no elaboration in suchness, and there is no action in it, so it is said that one acts in the ultimate truth where there is no pervasive wandering by profound action. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? In what does one act, and in what does one act? He replied: One acts in the ultimate truth where there is no pervasive wandering by any two. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think?

Does that which practices the ultimate meaning practice in the all-pervading practice, or does it practice in characteristics? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Does he destroy the perception of characteristics or the perception of no characteristics? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. That which is called non-duality is very profound. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if so, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva destroy the perception of characteristics or no characteristics? He replied: Blessed One, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he does not think, 'I shall destroy characteristics,' or 'I shall destroy no characteristics.' Blessed One, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if he does not perfect the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, he will not attain unexcelled perfect enlightenment. Blessed One, this is the skillful means of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. With that skillful means, he does not make any dharma into existence, nor does he make it into non-existence. Why is that? Blessed One, it is because the Bodhisattva Mahasattva wishes to know that the self-nature of all dharmas is emptiness. Having abided in that self-nature emptiness, for the sake of sentient beings, he enters into the three samadhis. With those samadhis, he causes all sentient beings to mature. Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva enter into the samadhis for the sake of sentient beings, and with those samadhis, cause all sentient beings to mature? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the three samadhis, and those sentient beings who practice in the perception of discrimination, they are in emptiness.
