And also the entrances into [right concentration], emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, are they also non-conceptual? The superknowledges, the concentrations, and the gateways of dharanis, are they also non-conceptual? The powers of the Thus-Gone One, the fearlessnesses, the individual exact knowledges, the great love, the great compassion, and the unmixed qualities of the Buddhas, are they also non-conceptual? Even up to the state of all-knowingness, is it also non-conceptual? Is enlightenment also non-conceptual? Is a Buddha also non-conceptual? Are the conditioned realm and the unconditioned realm also non-conceptual? Subhuti said: "Venerable Sariputra, all phenomena are non-conceptual." He said: "Venerable Subhuti, if that is so, if all phenomena are non-conceptual, then from where do the distinctions arise that sentient beings revolve in the five realms of hell, the birthplace of animals, the world of Yama, gods, and humans? From where do the designations of stream-enterer, once-returner, non-returner, arhat, solitary Buddha, bodhisattva, and Buddha Bhagavan arise?" Subhuti said: "Venerable Sariputra, those sentient beings who manifestly engage in actions of body, speech, and mind arising from perversion, they manifestly accomplish such birthplaces and, grasping onto the discriminations arising from the basis of aggregates, the ripening of actions, manifestly accomplish the hells of sentient beings, the birthplaces of animals, the world of Yama, gods, and humans. Venerable Sariputra, as for what you say, 'From where does the designation of stream-enterer arise? From where do the designations of once-returner, non-returner, arhatship itself, solitary Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and Thus-Gone Ones, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas arise?' Venerable Sariputra, it is from non-conceptuality that one is designated as a stream-enterer. It is from non-conceptuality that the fruit of stream-entry is designated.

said. From non-discrimination, it is said to be a once-returner, a non-returner, and an Arhat. From non-discrimination, it is said to be a Pratyekabuddha and self-enlightenment. From non-discrimination, it is said to be a Buddha. From non-discrimination, it is said to be enlightenment. Shariputra, in the past, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, as many as there were, those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, did not have discrimination and had abandoned discrimination. Shariputra, in the future, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, as many as there will be, those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, will not have discrimination and will abandon discrimination. Shariputra, in the present time, in the ten directions of the world, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, as many as there are, who have manifestly awakened to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, do not have discrimination and have completely abandoned discrimination. Therefore, Shariputra, in this way, one should strive for the Suchness of non-discrimination of all dharmas, the Suchness of the ultimate reality, and the Suchness of the realm of dharma, and thus understand without discrimination. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should thus practice the Prajnaparamita of non-discrimination. By practicing the Prajnaparamita of non-discrimination, one will manifestly awaken to all non-discriminatory dharmas and become a Buddha, which is said to be the second discrimination of the object of apprehension that belongs to the side of negation. Chapter Fifty-Five Then, Shariputra said to Subhuti: O Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices Prajnaparamita is practicing the essence. After saying this, Subhuti said to Shariputra:

Shariputra, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom is practicing what is without essence. Why is that? Shariputra, the Perfection of Wisdom is without essence. The Perfection of Dhyana, the Perfection of Virya, the Perfection of Kshanti, the Perfection of Shila, and the Perfection of Dana are without essence. Inner emptiness is without essence. The emptiness of the nature of non-things up to the emptiness of the nature of non-things is without essence. The mindfulnesses are without essence. The right abandonments, the legs of magical power, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path are without essence. The eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha up to all-knowingness are without essence. Why is that? Because the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom does not perceive even the absence of essence, nor does he truly see it, how much less can he perceive essence? Then, many sons of the gods who dwell in the desire realm and the form realm thought, "Any son or daughter of good family who generates the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and who practices this profound Perfection of Wisdom as it has been taught, and who, even though practicing this meaning, does not manifest any true limit by which they would abide in the ground of a Hearer or a Pratyekabuddha, those are places to be revered. By that designation, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who do not manifest this equality of Dharma are worthy of reverence." Then the venerable Subhuti said to those sons of the gods, "Sons of the gods, what equality of Dharma do those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas manifest, by which they would abide in the ground of a Hearer or a Pratyekabuddha? They do not manifest it.
