will prophesy, saying, 'You will attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, manifest complete Buddhahood, and your name will become this.' The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will speak of whatever name he has thought of and considered. Regarding this, a Bodhisattva with impure wisdom and unskilled in means will think like this: 'The name that I have mentally speculated and subsequently considered will become my name when I attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment.' He will think in the way that is taught by an evil demon, a god of the demonic host, or a bhikshu blessed by a demon. 'What this bhikshu teaches is completely consistent with the way I generated the mind of enlightenment and my name.' He will think, 'I have been prophesied by the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One to attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment.' Subhuti, for that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, the appearance, signs, and characteristics of a non-retreating Bodhisattva-Mahasattva that I have spoken of do not exist. If he uses that name and prophecy to disparage other Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, then that arrogant mind will distance him from unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Like this, one who does not possess skillful means, is separated from the Perfection of Wisdom, is separated from virtuous friends, and is completely controlled by evil friends, his ground can be understood as two: namely, the ground of a Hearer and the ground of a Solitary Buddha. Or, he will wander in samsara for a very long time, and only by attending, serving, and making offerings to virtuous friends, and relying on this Perfection of Wisdom, will he manifest complete attainment of unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva does not repeatedly visit and serve virtuous friends, and if he obtains a body and does not slander or cling to his previous generation of the mind of enlightenment, then know that he will go to two grounds: namely, the ground of a Hearer.

Or the ground of Pratyekabuddhas. For example, if a Bhikshu of the Hearer Vehicle commits any of the four root downfalls, he is no longer a Bhikshu, no longer a son of Shakya. Because he has lost the qualification to attain any of the four fruits of a Shramana with that very body. Subhuti, similarly, if any Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, merely by proclaiming his name, generates a conceited mind, and merely by reciting his name, generates a mind of contempt, ridicule, and belittlement towards other Bodhisattvas, that is even more serious. It should be understood that this thought is even more serious. Subhuti, in this way, by proclaiming the name, even the extremely subtle deeds of Mara will become apparent. Subhuti, let alone the four root downfalls, merely by proclaiming the name of a Bodhisattva and generating a conceited mind, that is even more serious than the five heinous crimes. It should be understood that this thought is even more serious. Subhuti, furthermore, an evil Mara will proclaim the virtues of solitude and come near to a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, saying, "The Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, has spoken of the virtues of solitude." Subhuti, I have not spoken of the monastery, forest, or remote place of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva as being solitary. The venerable one asked: "Bhagavan, if the monastery, forest, and remote place are not solitary, then what other solitude is there for a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva?" "Bhagavan, what other kind of solitude is there for a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva?" The Bhagavan said: "Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is solitary from the mental activity associated with Hearers and Pratyekabuddhas, then it is permissible to practice in a monastery, forest, or remote place. Subhuti, that is solitude, which I have granted to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. If one practices in this solitude day and night, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva

Dwelling in the samadhi of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, dwelling in the eight liberations, dwelling in the nine successive abidings, dwelling in the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, the thirty-two major marks of a great being, the eighty minor marks, dwelling in the six superknowledges arising from maturation, he will teach the Dharma to sentient beings. In that, he does not perceive sentient beings, nor does he perceive the designation of sentient beings. Because he does not perceive sentient beings, he does not perceive form. Because he does not perceive sentient beings, he does not perceive feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. Because he does not perceive sentient beings, he does not perceive even the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha. Because he does not perceive sentient beings, he does not perceive even omniscience. Because he does not perceive sentient beings, he does not perceive the thirty-two major marks of a great being. He does not perceive the eighty minor marks. Where sentient beings are not perceived, there are no sentient beings. There is no form. There is no feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. There are not even the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha. There is not even omniscience. There are no thirty-two major marks of a great being. There are no eighty minor marks. Why is that? World-Honored One, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thus engages in the Perfection of Wisdom, if the Bodhisattva himself is unobtainable, how much less obtainable are the qualities of the aspects of enlightenment? The World-Honored One said: Well said! Well said! It is just as you say. Subhuti, thus, because sentient beings are not perceived, one should understand inner emptiness. One should understand outer emptiness. One should understand emptiness of both inner and outer. One should understand emptiness of the unapprehensible nature of non-entities.
