That is its direct realization. Whatever path is cultivated to abandon form, it is neither cultivation nor non-cultivation, that is its cultivation. Whatever path is cultivated to abandon feeling, perception, mental formations, consciousness, and even the dharmas of the Buddhas, it is neither cultivation nor non-cultivation, that is its cultivation. Maitreya asked: World Honored One, what is the complete understanding, abandonment, direct realization, and the stable and steadfast nirvana of a Bodhisattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom in this way? The World Honored One replied: Maitreya, the nirvana of Bodhisattvas is profound, extremely profound. Maitreya asked: World Honored One, for what reason is the nirvana of Bodhisattvas so profound and extremely profound? The World Honored One replied: Maitreya, the nirvana of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas is like this, it is neither nirvana nor non-nirvana, therefore it is called profound and extremely profound. Maitreya asked: World Honored One, how is it that the nirvana of Bodhisattvas is neither nirvana nor non-nirvana? The World Honored One replied: Maitreya, because they do not completely abandon samsara for the sake of others, it is not nirvana. Because they do not completely abandon non-nirvana for the sake of themselves, it is not non-nirvana. Maitreya asked: World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva contemplates for the sake of others and does not completely abandon samsara, then since he does not abandon samsara, how will he not completely abandon nirvana? World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva contemplates for the sake of himself and does not completely abandon nirvana, then how will he not completely abandon samsara? The World Honored One replied: Maitreya, here, a Bodhisattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom does not discriminate samsara as samsara itself, nor does he discriminate nirvana as nirvana itself, because he does not discriminate in this way, so it is like this,

Saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are equal, they become equal through equality. What is the reason for that? It is because, like this, for saṃsāra, one does not discriminate saṃsāra itself, so one does not become disgusted with saṃsāra. Similarly, for nirvāṇa, one does not discriminate nirvāṇa itself, therefore, for nirvāṇa also, one should understand it as completely non-discriminating. Maitreya asked: Blessed One, then how is it that a bodhisattva who practices the prajñāpāramitā, abiding in the realm of non-discrimination, since he has not abandoned saṃsāra, he has also not taken saṃsāra, and since he has not abandoned nirvāṇa, he has also not taken nirvāṇa, is it not so? Blessed One, if there is no taking, then how is it that there is no abandoning? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, it is like this, one does not say to take saṃsāra or not to take saṃsāra. One does not say to take nirvāṇa or not to take nirvāṇa. Maitreya, however, a bodhisattva who practices the prajñāpāramitā, with the wisdom mind focused on the realm of non-discrimination, having obtained mastery over the mind of wisdom, through skillful means, in order to show saṃsāra in the ten directions of the world, in realms as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, I say to those nirvāṇa bodhisattvas who do not completely abandon saṃsāra. Because they abide in the realm of non-objectification of emptiness, I say that they do not completely abandon nirvāṇa. Maitreya asked: Blessed One, how should one view the collection of characteristics of non-discrimination? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, whatever is form, whatever is feeling, whatever is perception, whatever are formations, whatever is consciousness, and whatever is in between the dharmas of the Buddhas, whatever is the emptiness of form, whatever is feeling, whatever is perception, whatever are formations, whatever is consciousness, and whatever is the emptiness in between the dharmas of the Buddhas, those dharmas and the entity and non-entity of that emptiness, being non-dual and free from elaboration, that is, Maitreya, how one views the collection of characteristics of non-discrimination. Maitreya asked: Blessed One, how do all the śrāvakas definitively and uniquely

Are you dwelling in Nirvana? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, it is not so. Why is that? Maitreya, this world is a variety of realms, many realms. In these various realms, it appears that there are many kinds and natures of sentient beings. Maitreya, some from the very beginning seek the distinction of goodness, and there are those who attain the distinction of goodness. Some from the very beginning seek the distinction of inferiority, and there are those who are content with attaining that inferiority. Some from the very beginning seek the distinction of inferiority, and having attained the distinction of inferiority, they are not content with just that, but further seek the distinction of goodness, and there are those who are able to attain the distinction of goodness. Maitreya asked: Blessed One, among these three kinds of sentient beings, which one, after attaining Arhatship, even if they seek the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, how can they attain it since there is no rebirth? Is realization itself their rebirth? The Blessed One replied: Maitreya, I do not say that their rebirth is caused by the power of karma and afflictions. I say that their rebirth is inconceivable, miraculous, and completely transformed. Maitreya asked: Blessed One, like this, from the very beginning, seeking the distinction of goodness and being able to attain the distinction of goodness, the great aspiration and the superior intention of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas are truly wonderful! Blessed One, what is the great aspiration of the Bodhisattva? What is the superior intention? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas do not seek all of Indra, the guardians of the world, the Chakravartin, and all the perfections of the world, but they are not attached to them, they do not cling to them, but they completely dedicate those roots of virtue to the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, this is the great aspiration of the Bodhisattvas. Bodhisattva
