I shall train in the fact that formations and consciousness are merely nominal, and that among the qualities of the Buddhas, it is merely nominal. If there is no entity, then its name should not be merely nominal, for what is called form should not be merely nominal. Feeling, perception, formations, and what is called consciousness, and what are called the qualities of the Buddhas, should not be merely nominal. When he had spoken thus, the Blessed One spoke to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya: "What is called form is that which is suddenly named as the entity of the characteristics of formations. Feeling, perception, formations, and what is called consciousness are suddenly named. What is called the qualities of the Buddhas is also suddenly named. Maitreya, from whatever entity of the characteristics of formations, one truly understands, fully understands, and individually truly knows that the name called form is called form, Maitreya, for that reason, whatever is called form, and feeling, perception, formations, and whatever is called consciousness, and whatever is called the qualities of the Buddhas, these are suddenly named as the entity of the characteristics of formations, and should be known as such. Maitreya, what do you think? Is there any thought, or appropriation, or name, or term, or direct perception in this entity of the characteristics of formations?" He replied, "Blessed One, it is not so." Maitreya, for this reason, whatever is called form, and feeling, perception, formations, and whatever is called consciousness, and whatever is called the qualities of the Buddhas, these are suddenly named as the entity of the characteristics of formations, and should be known. Then the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya said to the Blessed One:

O! Blessed One, if that is so, then what is called "form," and feeling, perception, formations, and what is called "consciousness," and even the Buddhadharma, are these things that are apprehended as objects of the characteristics of formations, and upon which names, perceptions, designations, and subsequent expressions are applied, are they solely focused on the nature of form? After asking this, the Blessed One spoke to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya: "Regarding the objects of the characteristics of formations, names are applied to what is called 'form,' and names, perceptions, designations, and subsequent expressions are applied. Maitreya, what do you think about this? Is it the nature of form, or is it merely a designation?" He replied: "It is merely a designation." "Blessed One, it is merely a designation." "Maitreya, then, what is called 'form,' is it apprehended as an object of the characteristics of formations, and upon which names, perceptions, designations, and subsequent expressions are applied, is it solely focused on the nature of form? Do you think so? Maitreya, what do you think about this? Are feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, and even the Buddhadharma, their nature or merely a designation?" He replied: "Blessed One, it is merely a designation. Blessed One, it is merely a designation." "Maitreya, then, how could it be solely focused on the nature of feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, and even the Buddhadharma? How could you think that way?" Maitreya replied: "Blessed One, if form is merely name, perception, symbol, designation, and expression. Blessed One, if feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, and even the Buddhadharma, are also merely name, perception, symbol, designation, and expression. In that case, wouldn't what is called name, perception, symbol, designation, and expression, merely become focused on the nature of form? In that case, wouldn't what is called name, perception, symbol, designation, and expression, become feeling, perception, formations

Or, wouldn't one be merely fixated on regarding the form, consciousness, and all the Buddha's teachings as their very nature? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, what do you think about this? Is what is called form merely a name, concept, symbol, designation, and conventional truth? And what about what is called feeling, perception, formation, consciousness, and even the Buddha's teachings, are they merely names, concepts, symbols, designations, and conventional truths? Is there any arising or ceasing, or any defilement or purification in them? Maitreya replied: Blessed One, there are none of those. The Blessed One said: Maitreya, then what do you think about this? Would you think of clinging to the nature of form, feeling, perception, formation, consciousness, and likewise, even the Buddha's teachings? Maitreya asked: Blessed One, is it that in all aspects, with all characteristics, form is simply non-existent? Blessed One, is it that in all aspects, with all characteristics, feeling, perception, formation, consciousness, and the Buddha's teachings are simply non-existent? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, I do not say that in all aspects, with all characteristics, form is non-existent. Maitreya, I do not say that in all aspects, with all characteristics, feeling, perception, formation, consciousness, and even the Buddha's teachings are non-existent. Maitreya asked: Blessed One, how is it that form is non-existent? How is it that feeling, perception, formation, consciousness, and even the Buddha's teachings are non-existent? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, form exists by worldly convention and common usage, but it is not so in ultimate truth. Maitreya, feeling, perception, formation, consciousness, and even the Buddha's teachings exist by worldly convention and common usage, but they are not so in ultimate truth. Maitreya asked: Blessed One, as I understand the meaning of what the Blessed One has said,
