Thus, one applies to the path of the Hearers, or the path of the Solitary Buddhas, or the path of the Buddhas, and teaches them the Dharma in this way: 'Those dharmas to which you are manifestly attached are empty of intrinsic nature. Dharmas that are empty of intrinsic nature cannot be manifestly attached to. There is no manifest attachment to emptiness.' Thus, one teaches the Dharma. Subhuti, in this way, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he abides in manifest knowledge and works for the benefit of sentient beings. With that divine eye, purified and surpassing the human, he sees all the realms of the world in the southern, western, northern, northeastern, southeastern, southwestern, northwestern, lower, and upper directions. Having gone to those places by means of miraculous power, he works for the benefit of sentient beings with generosity, or discipline, or patience, or diligence, or meditation, or wisdom, or the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, or the doors of liberation—emptiness, signlessness, or wishlessness—or meditations, or immeasurables, or formless absorptions, or liberations, or gradual abidings in absorption, or samadhis, or dharani doors, or the powers of the Tathagatas, or fearlessnesses, or individual perfect knowledges, or unmixed Buddha-dharmas, or the dharma of the Hearers, or the dharma of the Solitary Buddhas, or the dharma of the Bodhisattvas, or the dharma of the Buddhas, and he does the deeds of those sentient beings. To those sentient beings who are miserly, he teaches the Dharma in this way: 'Give alms! Poverty is suffering. If one cannot accomplish one's own benefit by means of poverty, what need is there to mention accomplishing the benefit of others? Therefore, you should give alms and make yourself happy, and make others happy as well. Oppressed by poverty, and having one's own flesh eaten by oneself, one will not be liberated from the three lower realms!' Thus, one teaches the Dharma. To those sentient beings who have bad discipline, he teaches the Dharma in this way: 'O men, bad discipline is suffering. Bad discipline

Because I cannot even do things for myself, what need is there to mention doing things for others? The result of maturing bad ethics is the hell of sentient beings, or the birthplace of animals, or the realm of Yama. If you fall into the three lower realms, we ourselves cannot liberate ourselves, what need is there to mention liberating others? Therefore, you should not give even a little opportunity to the mind of bad ethics. Later you will become regretful, thus the Dharma is taught. To those sentient beings who have harmful intentions towards each other, the Dharma is taught thus: Do not have harmful intentions towards each other, for if the mind becomes disturbed, no virtuous Dharma will arise. Therefore, if you become mutually disturbed in mind, you will be born in the hell of sentient beings, or be born in the birthplace of animals, or be born in the realm of Yama. Therefore, you should not give even a little opportunity to a disturbed mind. Later you will become regretful, thus the Dharma is taught. To those sentient beings who are lazy, the Dharma is taught thus: Alas, noble ones, laziness is suffering, for laziness cannot even do things for oneself, what need is there to mention doing things for others? The result of maturing laziness is the hell of sentient beings, or the birthplace of animals, or the realm of Yama. If you fall into the three lower realms, we ourselves cannot liberate ourselves, what need is there to mention liberating others? Therefore, you should not give even a little opportunity to a lazy mind. Later you will become regretful, thus the Dharma is taught. To those sentient beings who are distracted, the Dharma is taught thus: Alas, noble ones, distraction is suffering, for the result of maturing distraction is the hell of sentient beings, or the birthplace of animals, or the realm of Yama. To those sentient beings who have perverted wisdom, it is said thus:

He teaches the Dharma, saying: "O noble ones, corrupt wisdom is the root of suffering. Corrupt wisdom cannot even accomplish one's own benefit, let alone the benefit of others. The result of corrupt wisdom is the hell realm for sentient beings, or the birthplace of animals, or the realm of Yama, the Lord of Death. Therefore, you should not give even the slightest opportunity to thoughts of corrupt wisdom. Do not become regretful later!" Thus he teaches the Dharma. Those who engage in desire should be directed towards the impure. Those who engage in hatred should be directed towards loving-kindness. Those who engage in delusion should be directed towards dependent origination. Those who have entered the wrong path should be directed towards the correct path. They should be directed towards the path of the Hearers, or the path of the Solitary Buddhas, or the path of the Buddhas. And to them he teaches the Dharma thus: "The dharmas to which you are attached are empty of inherent existence. Dharmas that are empty of inherent existence cannot be clung to, because emptiness itself has no attachment." Thus he teaches the Dharma. Subhuti, therefore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he abides in the superknowledges and benefits sentient beings. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cannot teach the Dharma to sentient beings without abiding in the superknowledges, nor can he lead sentient beings who have gone astray onto the correct path. Subhuti, just as a bird without wings cannot fly in the sky, Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cannot teach the Dharma to sentient beings without relying on the superknowledges. Subhuti, therefore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he should attain the superknowledges. Having attained these superknowledges, he brings happiness by benefiting sentient beings in whatever way they desire. With his divine eye, he sees the eastern world, as many as the sands of the Ganges River.
