Mo she. Even the one with all aspects of knowledge should not develop pride. Because there is no essence in it, in this way, admonish sentient beings, then teach, and even if practicing the bodhisattva path, there is no attachment to anything. Why is that? Because all dharmas are without attachment, because they have the nature of emptiness. There is no nature of what can be attached to. Subhuti, therefore, a bodhisattva mahasattva, even if practicing the path of enlightenment, does not abide in anything, and he practices the perfection of generosity in a non-abiding manner, and does not abide in it. The perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, the perfection of wisdom, even if practicing, he does not abide in it. He even enters the first dhyana, but does not abide in it. Why is that? This is because the first dhyana is empty by the nature of dhyana. Whoever enters into samadhi is also empty by nature. In whatever way the samadhi is entered, those ways are also empty by nature. He enters the second dhyana, the third dhyana, and the fourth dhyana. He enters into loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. He enters into the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. The eight liberations, the nine successive abidings, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the noble truths, Emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, supernormal knowledge, even if entering into them, he does not abide in them. Why is that? This is because all supernormal knowledges are empty by the nature of supernormal knowledges. Whoever enters into samadhi is also empty by nature. In whatever way the samadhi is entered, those ways are also empty by nature. Even if he obtains the fruit of a stream-enterer, he does not abide in it. Once

Even having attained the fruit of stream-enterer, the fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, even having attained Arhatship, one does not abide in that. Even having attained Pratyekabuddha enlightenment, one does not abide in that. The questioner asks: For what reason does one not abide? The Blessed One replied: One does not abide for two reasons. What are the two? They are essence and non-essence. For these two reasons, wherever one abides, however one abides, or whatever will abide, one does not abide in such fruits. One does not merely hold onto that with joy. Why is that? Like this, one should not obtain the fruit of stream-enterer, but one should not abide in that. One should not obtain the fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, and Arhatship, but one should not abide in that. One should not obtain up to the level of a solitary Buddha, but one should not abide in that. One should fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Why is that? Because from the moment I first generated the mind, I have not generated any other thought except for generating the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Why is that? Because from the first bhumi onwards, I have not generated any other thought except for generating the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. From the tenth bhumi onwards, I have not generated any other thought except for generating the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Having entered the faultless state of a Bodhisattva, one thinks: I have not generated any other thought except for generating the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, without mental distraction, whether acting with body, speech, or mind, there is nothing that is not done with the mind of enlightenment. That Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the mind of enlightenment, cultivates the path to enlightenment without mental distraction. The questioner asks: Blessed One, if all phenomena are unborn, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cultivate the path to enlightenment?

I prostrate. The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. All dharmas are unborn. What is meant by unborn? For those things that do not manifestly assemble, all dharmas are unborn." Asked: "Blessed One, whether the Tathagatas appear or whether the Tathagatas do not appear, is not the dharmata of dharmas still abiding as such?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Whether the Tathagatas appear or whether the Tathagatas do not appear, the dharmata of dharmas abides as such. For those who do not understand such an abiding nature of dharma, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the path to enlightenment for their benefit, and through this path, completely liberates beings from samsara. This is the activity of establishing [beings] in abandoning manifest clinging to all dharmas." Asked: "Blessed One, is it through the path that has arisen that one will attain enlightenment?" The Blessed One said: "No." Asked: "Blessed One, then is it through the path that has not arisen that one will attain enlightenment?" The Blessed One said: "No." Asked: "Blessed One, then is it through the path that is both arisen and not arisen that one will attain enlightenment?" The Blessed One said: "No." Asked: "Blessed One, then is it through the path that is neither arisen nor not arisen that one will attain enlightenment?" The Blessed One said: "No." Asked: "Blessed One, then how will enlightenment be attained?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, enlightenment is not attained through a path, nor is it attained through non-path. Enlightenment itself is the path, and the path itself is enlightenment." Asked: "Blessed One, if it is so that enlightenment itself is the path, and the path itself is enlightenment, then the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should have already attained enlightenment long ago.
