This, having cultivated and abided, is the fifth liberation. This, having cultivated and abided in the sphere of nothingness, is the sixth liberation. This, having cultivated and abided in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, is the seventh liberation. This, having cultivated and abided in the cessation of perception and feeling, is the eighth liberation. These are called the eight liberations. What are the nine successive states of abiding? Here, someone, secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with thought and examination, possessed of joy and bliss born of seclusion, having cultivated, abides in the first dhyana. With the subsiding of thought and examination, with inner purity, with singleness of mind, without thought, without examination, possessed of joy and bliss born of concentration, having cultivated, abides in the second dhyana. He, detached from desire for joy, abides in equanimity, mindful and aware, experiencing bliss with the body, and the noble ones declare that abiding in mindfulness, detached from bliss, is equanimity. Having cultivated, he abides in the third dhyana, which is without joy. He, having abandoned bliss and also having abandoned suffering, with the previous disappearance of joy and sorrow, experiencing neither bliss nor suffering, with pure equanimity and mindfulness, having cultivated, abides in the fourth dhyana. He, having completely transcended all perceptions of form, with the disappearance of perceptions of resistance, not attending to perceptions of diversity, thinking "space is infinite," having cultivated, abides in the sphere of infinite space. He, having completely transcended all the sphere of infinite space, thinking "consciousness is infinite," having cultivated, abides in the sphere of infinite consciousness. He, having completely transcended all the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking "there is nothing at all," having cultivated, abides in the sphere of nothingness. He, having completely transcended all the sphere of nothingness, abides in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception.

Having striven thus, he abides. He, in every way, having completely transcended the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, strives to approach the cessation of perception and feeling, and abides. This is called the nine successive abidings. What are the ten spheres of exhaustion? Exhaustion of earth, exhaustion of water, exhaustion of fire, exhaustion of wind, exhaustion of blue, exhaustion of yellow, exhaustion of red, exhaustion of white, exhaustion of consciousness, exhaustion of space. These are called the ten spheres of exhaustion. What are the eight spheres of mastery? One perceives form internally, and though seeing external forms, subtle, agreeable in color, and disagreeable in color, yet one masters those forms and knows them, masters them and sees them, and thus perceives them. This is the first sphere of mastery. One perceives form internally, and though seeing external forms, coarse, agreeable in color, and disagreeable in color, yet one masters those forms and knows them, masters them and sees them, and thus perceives them. This is the second sphere of mastery. One perceives no form internally, and though seeing external forms, coarse, agreeable in color, and disagreeable in color, yet one masters those forms and knows them, masters them and sees them, and thus perceives them. This is the third sphere of mastery. One perceives no form internally, and though seeing external forms, coarse, agreeable in color, and disagreeable in color, etc., yet one masters those forms and knows them, masters them and sees them, and thus perceives them. This is the fourth sphere of mastery. One perceives no form internally, and though seeing external forms, blue, blue in color, appearing blue, blue in hue, such as, for example, the Uma flower, or like cloth made in Varanasi, blue, blue in color, appearing blue, blue in hue, yet one masters those forms and knows them, masters them and sees them, and thus perceives them. This is the fifth sphere of mastery. One perceives no form internally, and though seeing external forms, yellow
