In that place, she generated the first thought of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The venerable Ananda reported: "World Honored One, this sister has completely trained for the sake of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." The World Honored One said: "Ananda, it is so, it is so. It is as you have said. Ananda, this sister has completely trained for the sake of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, which is said to be the pure and unsurpassed realm." The Practice of Skillful Means. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the World Honored One: "World Honored One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom completely merge into emptiness? How does he enter into the samadhi of emptiness? How does he become completely familiar with the signless? How does he enter into the samadhi of the signless? How does he become completely familiar with the wishless? How does he enter into the samadhi of the wishless? How does he become completely familiar with the aspects of the Dharma of Enlightenment? How does he cultivate the Dharma of Enlightenment? This is the realm of skillful means." Having reported thus, the World Honored One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, in this, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom should observe thus: Form is empty. Feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness are also empty. The twelve sources, the eighteen realms, and the twelve links of dependent origination are also empty. All perfections, all praises, and the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are also empty. Even the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha are empty. One should observe thus: The desire realm is empty. The form realm and the formless realm are also empty. And how is it so from what?

If one examines, in order not to distract the mind, one should examine in that way. Because he has an undistracted mind, he does not truly see the dharma that should be directly realized; because he does not truly see that dharma, he does not directly realize thought. Why is that? Because it is like this, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is well-trained in the dharma of all dharmas being empty of their own nature, so he does not discriminate against any dharma. He does not truly see whether all the dharmas of what is realized, what is to be realized, and what is realized by, are possessed or not possessed. Subhuti asked: The Blessed One said that the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not directly realize the dharmas of emptiness. Blessed One, how does the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abide in emptiness without directly realizing emptiness? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, when the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva individually observes emptiness with all excellent aspects, he does not think: I will directly realize, nor does he think: it is not directly realized. But he individually thinks: one should familiarize oneself. He thinks: this is not the time to directly realize, but the time to familiarize oneself. The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, while not in meditative equipoise, attaches his mind to the object. In the meantime, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will not completely degenerate from the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, nor will he directly realize the exhaustion of outflows. Why is that? The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva has such great wisdom. This abides in the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, and thus completely knows: this is the time to familiarize oneself, this is not the time to directly realize. Subhuti, when the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he thinks: this is the time for the Perfection of Generosity. This is the Perfection of Morality and the Perfection of Patience.
