Will gradually practice and gradually learn to become enlightened, and will gradually strive to do so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva first says to the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, and to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, and to the Arhats who have made offerings to many Buddhas, and to the Non-returners, and to the Once-returners, and to the Stream-enterers, that the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are of the nature of non-reality, and the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas are of the nature of non-reality, and the Pratyekabuddhas are of the nature of non-reality, and the Arhats are of the nature of non-reality, and the Non-returners are of the nature of non-reality, and the Once-returners are of the nature of non-reality, and the Stream-enterers are of the nature of non-reality, and all the Noble Ones are of the nature of non-reality, and the formations are of a small nature, and there is not even a place for a part of the tip of a hair. Having heard this, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thinks: If the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are also of the nature of non-reality, and the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, and the Arhats, and the Non-returners, and the Once-returners, and the Stream-enterers are also of the nature of non-reality, whether I attain unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment or not, all dharmas are of the nature of non-reality. In any case, I must attain unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, and make all sentient beings who act on the thought of reality rejoice in non-reality. Subhuti, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, in order to completely liberate all sentient beings from suffering, enters into unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, gradually acting, gradually learning, and gradually practicing, by means of what has been learned, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva of the past

Those who have become fully enlightened Buddhas through the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, engage in such gradual activities, gradual trainings, and gradual practices. That is, first, the perfection of generosity, the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, which are said to be the practice of the six perfections, are the general outline of gradual realization. Furthermore, Subhuti, from the time a Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the first thought of enlightenment, he takes hold of it. When he practices the perfection of generosity, he himself gives completely. He also encourages others to give. He speaks of the virtues of generosity. He also speaks of the virtues of other sentient beings who give completely and rejoices in accordance with them. Through that generosity, he obtains a great mass of enjoyments and gives completely with a mind free from miserliness. He gives food to those who desire food, drink to those who desire drink, vehicles to those who desire vehicles, clothes to those who desire clothes, incense to those who desire incense, garlands to those who desire garlands, ointments to those who desire ointments, bedding to those who desire bedding, dwellings to those who desire dwellings, and even lamps to those who desire lamps. He gives whatever human necessities there may be. Through that generosity, he establishes sentient beings in ethics, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the vision of the wisdom of liberation. Possessing the aggregates of ethics, the aggregates of concentration, the aggregates of wisdom, the aggregates of liberation, and the aggregates of the vision of the wisdom of liberation, he transcends the stages of hearers and solitary Buddhas and enters the faultless path of Bodhisattvas. Having entered the faultless path of Bodhisattvas, he purifies the Buddha-fields. Having purified the Buddha-fields, he ripens sentient beings. Having ripened sentient beings,

Having done so, one attains omniscience. Having attained omniscience, one turns the wheel of Dharma. Having turned the wheel of Dharma, one establishes beings individually in the three vehicles. Having established beings individually in the three vehicles, one completely liberates them from samsara. Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thoroughly engages in the activity of giving to the end, thoroughly engages in the training to the end, and thoroughly engages in the practice to the end, yet all of that is without object. Why is that? Because, like this, there is no inherent existence in that, which is the ultimate direct realization of the perfection of giving. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva, a Mahasattva, from the moment of first generating the mind, takes hold, "I also practice the perfection of morality." Furthermore, he also diligently encourages the perfection of morality. He speaks of the virtues of the perfection of morality. Furthermore, he rejoices and acts in harmony with those who practice the perfection of morality, also speaking of their virtues. Through that morality, he enables beings to fully attain the greatness of gods and the greatness of humans. He gives wealth to beings without wealth, and thoroughly establishes them in morality, as well as in concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the vision of the wisdom of liberation. Through that aggregate of morality, the aggregate of concentration, the aggregate of wisdom, the aggregate of liberation, and the aggregate of the vision of the wisdom of liberation, he transcends the level of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and through that very aggregate of morality, the aggregate of concentration, the aggregate of wisdom, the aggregate of liberation, and the aggregate of the vision of the wisdom of liberation, he enters the flawless state of a Bodhisattva. Having entered the flawless state of a Bodhisattva, he purifies the Buddha-field. Having purified the Buddha-field, he ripens beings. Having ripened beings, he attains omniscience. All kinds
