does not engage in the noble truths, meditative states, immeasurables, formless absorptions, liberations, successive abidings in absorption, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, supernormal knowledges, samādhi, or the gateways of dhāraṇī. It does not engage in the ten powers of the Tathāgata, the fearlessnesses, the distinct and perfect knowledges, or the unmixed qualities of a buddha. If it does not engage up to the very omniscience, then how will the bodhisattva mahāsattva engage in many roots of virtue, so that those will increase, having taken hold from the arising of the first mind until the mind is not subsequently produced, they will increase with many roots of virtue? The Blessed One said: Subhūti, those who engage in the two will not increase in roots of virtue. Why is that? Subhūti, all ordinary beings rely on the two, so they do not increase with roots of virtue. The bodhisattva mahāsattva does not engage in the two, that is, from the arising of the first mind until the subsequent mind is produced, it increases with roots of virtue, that is, the world with gods, humans, and asuras, by whatever non-virtuous root is diminished, will fall into the level of a śrāvaka or a pratyekabuddha, or will be completely robbed by other non-virtuous dharmas, and having been completely robbed by those, if one engages in the perfection of generosity, one will not increase with many roots of virtue, and if one engages in the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditative concentration, and the perfection of wisdom, one will not increase with many roots of virtue, and if one engages in inner emptiness up to the emptiness of the nature of non-things, one will not increase with many roots of virtue, and if one engages in the mindfulnesses, the correct abandonments, the legs of magical power, the faculties, the powers, the branches of enlightenment, and the noble

If one practices the eightfold noble path, the roots of virtue will not increase; if one practices the noble truths, meditative concentration, immeasurables, formless absorptions, liberations, the successively abiding absorptions, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, supernormal knowledges, samādhi, and the doors of dhāraṇī, the roots of virtue will not increase; if one practices the ten powers of the Tathāgata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, the roots of virtue will not increase; even up to the attainment of all-knowingness, the roots of virtue will not increase, and thus it cannot be disparaged. Subhūti, a bodhisattva-mahāsattva should thus practice the perfection of wisdom. The question: World-Honored One, what is it? Does a bodhisattva-mahāsattva practice the perfection of wisdom for the sake of the roots of virtue? The World-Honored One said: Subhūti, it is not so. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva does not practice the perfection of wisdom for the sake of the roots of virtue, nor does he practice the perfection of wisdom for the sake of the roots of non-virtue. If one has not attended upon the Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, has not perfected the roots of virtue, and has not been embraced by virtuous friends, a bodhisattva-mahāsattva cannot attain all-knowingness. The question: World-Honored One, how does a bodhisattva-mahāsattva who has attended upon the Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, who has been embraced by the roots of virtue, and who has been embraced by virtuous friends, attain all-knowingness? The World-Honored One said: Subhūti, here, a bodhisattva-mahāsattva, from the moment of generating the first thought, closely attends upon the Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones. Those Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, with sūtras, responsory verses, predictions, stanzas,
