That Bodhisattva should be known as irreversible. Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva retreats from the aggregates, retreats from the elements, retreats from the sense bases, retreats from dependent origination, retreats from the limbs of dependent origination, Subhuti, this Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should be known as irreversible. Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva retreats from the perfection of generosity, likewise retreats from the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, retreats from inner emptiness to the emptiness of the nature of non-things, retreats from the mindfulness, likewise retreats from the right abandonments, the feet of miraculous power, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the paths, retreats from the noble truths, the immeasurables, the meditations, and the formless absorptions, retreats from all liberations, samadhis, attainments, and the doors of dharani, retreats from the superknowledges, the ten powers, the fearlessnesses, the individual correct knowledges, and the unshared qualities of the Buddhas, retreats from the grounds of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, retreats from the unexcelled perfect and complete enlightenment, Subhuti, this Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should be known as irreversible. Why is that? Subhuti, because thus, the self-nature of form in which the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides is non-existent. Likewise, the self-nature of feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness is non-existent. Likewise, the self-nature of the aggregates, elements, sense bases, dependent origination, and limbs of dependent origination in which the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides is non-

Thus, wherever a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides, the emptiness of inherent existence until unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment is the first sign of irreversibility because it abides in the branch of ascertainment. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva knows that these shramanas and brahmins are to be known, are to be seen, and should thoroughly understand right view. He does not look upon other shramanas and brahmins who turn away from this, because they have no place to abide and do not have doubts. He does not hold moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, does not fall into wrong views, and does not truly count auspicious wonders. He does not pay homage to other gods, nor does he think of giving or offering flowers, incense, perfume, unguents, powders, clothes, umbrellas, banners, or flags to them. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who possesses these forms, these signs, and these characteristics should be known as irreversible, which is the second sign of irreversibility because it abides in the branch of ascertainment. Furthermore, Subhuti, an irreversible Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not turn to wrong views, is not born in the hells, is not born in the world of Yama, is not born in the body of an Asura, is not born in a border region, does not become foolish and mute, is not born among the long-lived gods, is not born in the realm of animals, and does not fully grasp the nature of a woman. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who possesses these forms, these signs, and these characteristics should be known as irreversible, which is the third sign of irreversibility because it abides in the branch of ascertainment. Furthermore, Subhuti, an irreversible Bodhisattva Mahasattva truly encourages and practices the ten paths of virtuous actions. He himself refrains from killing, and he also truly encourages others to refrain from killing. He speaks of the benefits of refraining from killing. Whatever others refrain from killing,

It is joyful to praise the virtues of those actions and be in harmony with them. Similarly, one should also refrain from taking without giving, engaging in improper desires, lying, slander, harsh speech, frivolous talk, greed, malice, and wrong views. Furthermore, one should encourage others to refrain from wrong views and praise the virtues of refraining from wrong views. It is joyful to praise the virtues of anyone else who refrains from wrong views and be in harmony with them.
