The suchness of consciousness is not perceived. When consciousness itself is not perceived, how can the suchness of consciousness be seen and fixated upon? In this, the suchness of the aggregates, elements, and sense bases is not perceived. When the aggregates, elements, and sense bases themselves are not perceived, how can the suchness of the aggregates, elements, and sense bases be seen and fixated upon? In this, dependent origination and its limbs, as well as the suchness of dependent origination and the suchness of its limbs, are not perceived. When dependent origination and its limbs themselves are not perceived, how can the suchness of dependent origination and the suchness of its limbs be seen and fixated upon? Similarly, all perfections, all emptinesses, all liberations, concentrations and attainments, the gateways of dharani, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the noble truths, the immeasurables, the concentrations and formless attainments, as well as emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, supernormal knowledges, the ten powers, fearlessnesses, individual perfect knowledges, the unmixed qualities of the Buddhas, all-knowingness, and the suchness of all-knowingness are not perceived. When all-knowingness itself is not perceived, how can the suchness of all-knowingness be seen and fixated upon? The Blessed One said: Shariputra, it is just so, it is just so. This suchness is profound. In this, form is not perceived. The suchness of form is not perceived. If the suchness of form is not perceived, how can the suchness of form be seen and fixated upon? In this, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are not perceived. The suchness of consciousness is not perceived. If consciousness itself is not perceived, how can the suchness of consciousness be seen and fixated upon? In this, the aggregates

And, one does not contemplate the skandhas, elements, sense-bases, and dependent origination. One does not contemplate the suchness of the skandhas, elements, sense-bases, and dependent origination. If one does not contemplate the skandhas, elements, sense-bases, and dependent origination themselves, how could one contemplate the suchness of the skandhas, elements, sense-bases, and dependent origination? Similarly, one does not contemplate up to the all-knowingness. One does not contemplate the suchness of all-knowingness. If one does not contemplate all-knowingness itself, how could one contemplate the suchness of all-knowingness? Shariputra, when this chapter on suchness, non-erroneous suchness, and non-other suchness was taught, two hundred monks, without attachment, had their minds completely liberated from the outflows. Five hundred nuns developed the Dharma eye, which is without dust and free from defilement, towards all phenomena. Five thousand Bodhisattvas obtained the tolerance of non-arising phenomena. Sixty Bodhisattvas who are irreversible in Dharma had their minds completely liberated from the outflows without attachment. Then, the venerable Shariputra, knowing that those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas had their minds completely liberated from the outflows without attachment, said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, by what cause and what condition do those Bodhisattvas become completely liberated in mind from the outflows? The Bhagavan said: Shariputra, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas attended and revered five hundred Buddhas, and always gave alms, kept moral discipline, cultivated patience, exerted effort, practiced meditation, and cultivated wisdom. However, they were separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and were not completely grasped by skillful means, thinking, "I am the giver of alms, I am the keeper of moral discipline, I am the cultivator of patience, I am the one who exerts effort, I am the one who engages in meditation, I am the one who cultivates wisdom." By acting in this way, they were separated from the Perfection of Wisdom, and because they were not skillful in means, therefore...

Furthermore, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom are practiced, and because they are indistinguishable from the behavior of various concepts, the Bodhisattvas do not enter without fault. Because they do not enter the Bodhisattva path without fault, they attain the fruit of stream-entry. They even attain the fruit of Arhatship. Shariputra, the path of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas is emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, but if they are separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and not grasped by skillful means, then they manifest the true end and become Shravakas. Shariputra asked: World-Honored One, why is it that the dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, even though they appear similar, those who are separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and lack skillful means manifest the true end and become Shravakas, while Bodhisattvas, relying on the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means, through practicing emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, awaken to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment? The World-Honored One said: Shariputra, here, some, separated from the mind of all-knowingness, merely practice the dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and because they rely on skillful means, they become Shravakas. Shariputra, here, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, not separated from the mind of all-knowingness, practice the dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and through skillful means, they enter the Bodhisattva path without fault and awaken to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Shariputra, it is like this, for example, a bird with a body of one hundred yojanas, two hundred yojanas, three hundred yojanas, four hundred yojanas, or five hundred yojanas, it thinks to go from the Thirty-Three Heavens to Jambudvipa, but that bird has no wings, how can it go to Jambudvipa?
