exists. The venerable Shariputra, by those names, it is also called I, I, but if I am truly non-existent, then that is not manifested. The venerable Shariputra, again, is it said that all dharmas are also thus, being the self-nature of non-things? The venerable Shariputra said: Yes, it is so. Why is that? The venerable Shariputra, this is the self-nature arising from combination. Shariputra said: Venerable Subhuti, what is the self-nature arising from combination? He replied: Form is the self-nature arising from combination. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are the self-nature arising from combination. The venerable Shariputra, the eye is the self-nature arising from combination. Ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are the self-nature arising from combination. Form is the self-nature arising from combination. Sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharmas are the self-nature arising from combination. Eye consciousness is the self-nature arising from combination.

The absence of inherent existence arising from the combination of the perfection of wisdom, the perfection of concentration, and the perfection of knowledge. The absence of inherent existence arising from the combination of inner emptiness. The absence of inherent existence arising from the combination of outer emptiness. The absence of inherent existence arising from the combination of inner and outer emptiness. The absence of inherent existence arising from the combination between the emptiness of the nature of non-things. The absence of inherent existence arising from the combination of the mindfulnesses. The absence of inherent existence arising from the combination of the right abandonments, the legs of magical power, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path. The absence of inherent existence arising from the combination of the concentrations, the immeasurables, the formless absorptions, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four individual perfect knowledges, and the unmixed qualities of the Buddha. The venerable Shariputra said in these ways that all phenomena are of the nature of non-things. The venerable Shariputra also said that all phenomena are impermanent, not separated from anything. He said: Venerable Subhuti, all phenomena are impermanent, what are those that are not separated from anything? He said: Venerable Shariputra, form is impermanent, not separated from anything. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are impermanent, not separated from anything. Why is that? Venerable Shariputra, whatever is impermanent is without things and inexhaustible. Similarly, all phenomena are suffering, selfless, peaceful, empty, signless, and wishless, not separated from anything. Why is that? Venerable Shariputra, thus whatever is wishless is without things and extinguished. Venerable Shariputra, all phenomena are virtuous, blameless, without outflows, without afflictions, transcendent, purified, and unconditioned.

It is not separate from anything. Why is that? Shariputra, whatever is unconditioned is without substance and exhausted. Therefore, Shariputra, all dharmas are without intrinsic nature, not separate from anything. Furthermore, Shariputra, all dharmas are neither permanent nor perishable. Said: Why, venerable Subhuti, are all dharmas neither permanent nor perishable? Subhuti said: Shariputra, form is neither permanent nor perishable. Why is that? Because its nature is such. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are neither permanent nor perishable. Why is that? Because its nature is such. Likewise, virtue and non-virtue, with and without fault, with and without outflows, with and without afflictions, mundane and supramundane, conditioned and unconditioned, defiled and purified dharmas, as well as samsara and nirvana, are neither permanent nor perishable. Why is that? Because their nature is such. Therefore, Shariputra, all dharmas are of the nature of non-things. Chapter Twenty-Four. Shariputra, if someone were to say, "Why is form not manifestly established? Why are feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness not manifestly established?" Shariputra, it is just so. Why is that? Shariputra, form is not manifestly conditioned. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are not manifestly conditioned. Why is that? Because there is no manifest conditioner for them. Shariputra, the eye is not manifestly conditioned. Why is that? Because there is no manifest conditioner for it.
