A Bodhisattva is not found and cannot be apprehended in the Perfection of Wisdom. The Perfection of Wisdom is not found and cannot be apprehended in the Perfection of Wisdom. The Perfection of Wisdom is not found and cannot be apprehended in a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva and the Perfection of Wisdom are not found and cannot be apprehended in instruction and following. Instruction and following are not found and cannot be apprehended in instruction and following. Instruction and following are not found and cannot be apprehended in a Bodhisattva and the Perfection of Wisdom. Venerable Shariputra, thus all dharmas are without existence and without apprehension, therefore a Bodhisattva is without existence and without apprehension, which is the negation of the obtainer from the ascertainment of obtaining. Venerable Shariputra, if someone says, "Why is it that the term 'Bodhisattva' is merely a name?" Venerable Shariputra, it is like this: the term 'Bodhisattva' is a name that is suddenly designated. Therefore, it is like this: the term 'Bodhisattva' is merely a name. The name of all dharmas does not come from anywhere in the ten directions, nor does it go anywhere, nor does it abide anywhere. Similarly, the name of a Bodhisattva does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere, nor does it abide anywhere. Venerable Shariputra, it is like this: the term 'form,' the term 'feeling,' the term 'perception,' the term 'formations,' and the term 'consciousness' are names that are suddenly designated. Thus, a name does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere, nor does it abide anywhere. That which is merely a name is not form, not feeling, not perception, not formations, not consciousness. Why is that? Thus, a name is empty by the nature of name. That which is empty is not a name. Therefore, it is like this: the term 'Bodhisattva' is merely a name. Venerable Shariputra, it is like this: the term 'sense-fields,' the term 'elements,' and the term 'dependent origination'

I, who am called "dependent arising," am a name that is suddenly established. Thus, a name does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere, nor does it abide anywhere. That which is called "mere name" is not a source of birth, not a realm, nor is it dependent arising. Why is that? Thus, a name is empty by its very nature of being a name. That which is emptiness is not a name. Therefore, thus, that which is called "Bodhisattva" is called a mere name. Venerable Shariputra, also this is a mere name, thus, that which is called "giving paramita." There is no giving paramita in a name, and there is no name in giving paramita. Why is that? Thus, whatever is a name, and whatever is giving paramita, both of those are non-existent and unattainable. Therefore, thus, that which is called "Bodhisattva" is a mere name. Moral discipline paramita, patience paramita, diligence paramita, meditative concentration paramita, and wisdom paramita, these are mere names. There is no wisdom paramita in a name, and there is no name in wisdom paramita. Why is that? Thus, whatever is a name, and whatever is wisdom paramita, both of those are non-existent and unattainable. Therefore, thus, that which is called "Bodhisattva" is a mere name. Thus, intrinsic emptiness is a mere name. There is no intrinsic emptiness in a name, and there is no name in intrinsic emptiness. Why is that? Thus, whatever is a name, and whatever is intrinsic emptiness, both of those are non-existent and unattainable. Therefore, thus, that which is called "Bodhisattva" is a mere name. The emptiness of the nature of non-things is a mere name. There is no emptiness of the nature of non-things in a name, and there is no name in the emptiness of the nature of non-things. Why is that? Thus, whatever is a name, and whatever is the emptiness of the nature of non-things, both of those are non-existent and unattainable. Therefore, thus,

That is, the name Bodhisattva is just a name. O venerable Shariputra, therefore, it should be said thus: the name Bodhisattva is just a name. O venerable Shariputra, it should be said thus: The name "Four Mindfulnesses" is a temporary designation. In the name, there are no Four Mindfulnesses; in the Four Mindfulnesses, there is no name. Why is that? Because whatever is name and whatever are the Four Mindfulnesses, both of these do not exist and are not found. Therefore, it should be said thus: the name Bodhisattva is just a name. O venerable Shariputra, it should be said thus: the Four Right Exertions, the Feet of Miraculous Power, the Faculties, the Powers, the Limbs of Enlightenment, the Noble Eightfold Path, these names are temporary designations. In the name, there is no Noble Eightfold Path; in the Noble Eightfold Path, there is no name. Why is that?
