O, Subhuti, you should begin with the Perfection of Wisdom of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. How do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas definitely arise in the Perfection of Wisdom? Please declare it in that way! Then, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, those great Hearers, and those sons of gods thought: Does the venerable Subhuti now teach the Perfection of Wisdom to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas by generating the power of his own wisdom's eloquence? Or will he teach it by the power of the Buddha? Then, the venerable Subhuti, by the power of the Buddha, knowing with his mind the complete thoughts of the minds of those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, those great Hearers, and those sons of gods, said this to the venerable Shariputra: Venerable Shariputra, whatever the Hearers of the Blessed One explain, teach, and closely explain, all of that should be understood as the power of the Tathagata's being. Why is that? In this way, because the Hearers of the Blessed One have trained in those Dharmas that the Tathagata has taught, they directly realize that Dharma-nature. Having directly realized that Dharma-nature, whatever they explain, teach, and closely explain, all of that is not contrary to Dharma-nature. Shariputra, this is indeed the Tathagata skillfully teaching the Perfection of Wisdom to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. Shariputra, this teaching of the Perfection of Wisdom to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas is not the domain of all Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. This is the close establishment of an instruction on the path of seeing. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, you say Bodhisattva, Bodhisattva. Blessed One, what Dharma is this term for? That is to say, it is called Bodhisattva. Blessed One, I have not truly seen that Dharma, that is to say, it is called Bodhisattva.

O Blessed One, since I have not truly seen a Bodhisattva, nor do I perceive the Perfection of Wisdom, to which Bodhisattva should I teach and indicate which Perfection of Wisdom? After saying this, the Blessed One spoke to the venerable Subhuti, saying: Subhuti, this is only a name. For example, the name Bodhisattva, and the name Perfection of Wisdom. The name of Bodhisattva, Is not within, nor is it without, nor is it seen apart from both. Subhuti, for example, although one says sentient being, sentient being, no sentient being is actually seen. That name is merely a designation, a designated dharma, a designated existence, which is the patience of knowing the dharma of suffering. That designation is merely expressed by a sign of a name, and apart from that, there is neither arising nor ceasing. Similarly, I, and life, and nourishment, and person, and individual, and born of power, and son of power, and doer, and feeler, and knower, and seer, all these are designated dharmas, and all these are from no arising and no ceasing, up to being expressed by name. Subhuti, similarly, whatever is the Perfection of Wisdom, whatever is the Bodhisattva, and whatever is the name of the Bodhisattva, all these are designated dharmas, and all these are from no arising and no ceasing, and are merely expressed by name. Subhuti, for example, what is called internal form, this is merely designated as a dharma, and that which is designated as a dharma is merely expressed by a sign of a name, it cannot be understood, there is no arising and no ceasing. Subhuti, what is called feeling, this is merely designated as a dharma. That which is designated as a dharma is merely expressed by a sign of a name, and apart from that, there is no arising and no ceasing. Subhuti, what is called perception, this is merely designated as a dharma. That which is designated as a dharma is merely expressed by a sign of a name, and apart from that, there is no arising and no ceasing.
