The five roots of faith, etc., and the root of samadhi, and the root of wisdom, which are invisible and can be subdued, this is called the root of all knowledge. What is the root of guarding all knowledge? It is the unlearned person, the Arhat, the Pratyekabuddha, the Bodhisattva, and the Tathagata, etc., the root of faith, the root of diligence, the root of mindfulness, the root of samadhi, and the root of wisdom. Subhuti, this is called the root of guarding all knowledge. Subhuti, this is also in the manner of non-objectification, it is the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Subhuti, furthermore, the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is like this: there are three samadhis. What are the three? They are the samadhi with investigation and with analysis, the samadhi without investigation but only with analysis, and the samadhi without investigation and without analysis. What is the samadhi with investigation and with analysis? Subhuti, in this, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, being secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, is with investigation and with analysis, with joy and bliss born of seclusion, having closely cultivated and abiding in the first dhyana, this is called the samadhi with investigation and with analysis. What is the samadhi without investigation but only with analysis? It is that which is between the first dhyana and the second dhyana, this is called the samadhi without investigation but only with analysis. What is the samadhi without investigation and without analysis? It is that which is equally entered from the second dhyana up to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, this is called the samadhi without investigation and without analysis. Subhuti, this is also in the manner of non-objectification, it is the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Subhuti, furthermore, the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is like this: there are ten recollections. What are the ten? They are the recollection of the Buddha and the recollection of the Dharma.

Recollection, recollection of the Sangha, recollection of discipline, recollection of generosity, recollection of the gods, recollection of peace, Recollection of death, recollection of what pertains to the body, recollection of breathing in and out. Subhuti, this too, in a non-apprehending manner, is the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is as follows: the four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the eight liberations, and the nine successive abidings. Subhuti, this too is the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is as follows: the ten powers of the Tathagata. What are the ten? Subhuti, here, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva truly knows what is a place and what is not a place; he truly knows, as it is, the ripening of actions from the past, future, and what has thus occurred, through the causes and conditions; he truly knows, as it is, the various realms of the world and the diverse inclinations; he truly knows, as it is, the various inclinations and diverse inclinations of other beings and persons; he truly knows, as it is, the superior and non-superior faculties of other beings and persons; he truly knows, as it is, the path that leads everywhere; he truly knows, as it is, the dhyanas, liberations, samadhis, absorptions, afflictions, and purifications of other beings and persons; he remembers various former abodes; with the divine eye, he truly knows, as it is, the death and birth of beings; and because of the exhaustion of defilements, without defilements, the liberation of mind and the liberation of wisdom.

Having realized the nature of things seen with one's own direct knowledge, and having closely cultivated and abided in it, my birth is exhausted. The pure conduct has been practiced. The task has been done. Knowing truly as it is, that there is nothing else to know beyond this. Subhuti, that too, by way of not focusing on it, is the great vehicle of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, the great vehicle of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is like this: the four fearlessnesses. What are the four? Alas! I have manifestly and completely awakened to these dharmas. If any renunciate, brahmin, god, demon, Brahma, or anyone else in the world were to dispute with me in accordance with the Dharma, saying that I have not manifestly and completely awakened to these dharmas, I do not truly see such a cause. Because I do not truly see that cause, I abide having attained happiness, attained freedom from sorrow, and attained fearlessness, and I make a vow in the supreme great position. I roar the lion's roar in the midst of the assembly. I shall turn the wheel of Brahma, which no renunciate, brahmin, god, demon, Brahma, or anyone else in the world can turn in accordance with the Dharma. Alas! My defilements are exhausted. If any renunciate, brahmin, god, demon, Brahma, or anyone else in the world were to dispute with me in accordance with the Dharma, saying that these defilements of mine are not exhausted, have not become completely exhausted, I do not truly see such a cause. Because I do not truly see this cause, I abide having attained happiness, attained freedom from sorrow, and attained fearlessness, and I make a vow in the supreme great position. I roar the lion's roar in the midst of the assembly. I shall turn the wheel of Brahma, which no renunciate, brahmin, god, demon, Brahma, or anyone else in the world can turn in accordance with the Dharma. Furthermore, whatever I have taught as a dharma of obstruction, if those are practiced, they will not turn into a dharma of obstruction, such as
