DTG082 0001.The Perfection of Wisdom in Twenty Five Thousand Lines..g2.0f

English

If one practices with the notion of consciousness being secluded or not secluded, then one is practicing with characteristics; one is not practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, while practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, due to unskilled means, practices among the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, then one is practicing with characteristics; one is not practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. Similarly, with regard to the superknowledges, the perfections, the meditations, the immeasurables, the formless absorptions, the five eyes, the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and even the unmixed qualities of the Buddha, if one practices, one is practicing with characteristics; one is not practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, while practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, due to unskilled means, thinks, "I am practicing the Perfection of Wisdom," then one is practicing with attachment; thinking, "It is without self." Such a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is practicing with characteristics. World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva thinks, "Whoever practices in that way is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. Is that the Perfection of Wisdom?" If one thinks in this way, then one is practicing with characteristics; one should know that is the unskilled means of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Then, the Venerable Shariputra said to the Venerable Subhuti, "Venerable Subhuti, how is one to know that this Bodhisattva Mahasattva is unskilled in means?" Subhuti said, "Venerable Shariputra, in this way, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, abiding in form, especially delighting, completely knowing; abiding in feeling, especially delighting, completely knowing; abiding in perception, especially delighting, completely knowing; abiding in formations, especially delighting, completely knowing; abiding in consciousness,

That is, the feeling arising from the condition of contact, and the feeling arising from the condition of the combination of mind and contact, whether it is pleasant feeling, painful feeling, or neither pleasant nor painful feeling, all abide in it, especially believing and fully knowing. If one abides in the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, especially believing and fully knowing, similarly, for the five eyes, the six superknowledges, the six perfections, meditation, the immeasurable ones, the formless attainments, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, the Arhat, the Pratyekabuddha, the Bodhisattva, and the laws of the Buddhas, all abide in it, especially believing and fully knowing, then he abides in the laws of the Buddhas, especially believing and fully knowing, thereby practicing the manifestation of the laws of the Buddhas. Because of practicing manifestation, he cannot be completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and mental distress, therefore he is said to be unable to be completely liberated from great suffering. Venerable Shariputra, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva has no chance to attain even the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground, what need is there to mention that he can attain the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment? This is impossible. Venerable Shariputra, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thus practices the Perfection of Wisdom, it should be known as unskilled means. The Blessed One said: Venerable Subhuti, how should a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practice the Perfection of Wisdom to be called skillful means? Subhuti said: Venerable Shariputra, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he does not abide in form, does not especially believe, does not fully know; he does not abide in feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, does not especially believe, does not fully know.
