Therefore, not being lazy is the Great Vehicle of the Perfection of Diligence. Its first dhyana and so on, as well as the formless attainments, are the Great Vehicle of the Perfection of Dhyana. Its contemplation with the mind of all-knowingness, contemplating the limbs of the first dhyana as impermanent, suffering, selfless, peaceful, empty, signless, and wishless, is the Great Vehicle of the Perfection of Wisdom, as it is taught. Entering the noble path, which is the aspects of enlightenment and so on, as well as the doors of liberation and so on, up to the unmixed qualities and so on, and cultivating all-knowingness, is the Great Vehicle, as it is taught. As it is said in that sutra: The vehicle of the Bodhisattva is to cultivate the thirty-seven aspects of enlightenment at all times, and so on, as it is taught. Entering the immeasurable is to engage in the four immeasurables, and with the patience of all-knowingness, it is the Perfection of Patience, and with the Great Vehicle of the Perfection of Diligence, the mind of the inferior vehicle is not mixed, and with the Great Vehicle of the Perfection of Wisdom, there is no tasting of the flavor of dhyana, and with the Great Vehicle of the Perfection of Dhyana, there is entering into the four immeasurables, and with the Great Vehicle of the Perfection of Generosity, there is definitely leading sentient beings to the exhaustion of defilements, and with the Great Vehicle of the Perfection of Morality, there is the complete dedication of dhyana and the immeasurables, as well as the signs and characteristics, to all-knowingness, as it is taught. This order of the perfections is spoken of in terms of the actions of a person abiding in the four immeasurables, and it should be known that such a thing is possible for that person. Again, there are four immeasurables, namely, loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, and each of these has three aspects, namely, focusing on sentient beings, focusing on phenomena, and having no focus. Among these...

Focusing on sentient beings is established through four causes: namely, being closely gathered, being the aspect of an incompatible antidote, being purified, and being the complete holding of the result. How is it closely gathered? Because it is closely gathered by three kinds of happiness. That which is called a mind endowed with loving-kindness abides closely in the sense of being closely gathered by benefit and happiness. That which is called vast is because it is gathered by the happiness of enjoyment in the desire realm. That which is called great means the ground of the first and second dhyanas, which are accompanied by joy. Because there is joy in those two. That which is called non-dual is a synonym for the ground of the third dhyana, which is without joy. Because it is free from suffering, it is non-dual. That which is called immeasurable is because the result is immeasurable, and like the confluence of the waters of the four great rivers, it should be known as immeasurable. Thus, it is also said that it is because it possesses happiness and so on. Thus, for the time being, it is closely gathered. How is it the aspect of an incompatible antidote? It is called unfettered, that is, the contradiction of being closely gathered by the unpleasant and being closely gathered by the pleasant is the antidote to malice. How is it purified? It is called harmless and without obscurations, that is, because after abandoning the obscurations of sleep, drowsiness, excitement, and regret in the order as they are, one enters into that very reality. The complete holding of the result is harmlessness. The maturation of the desire and form realms, and the corresponding cause, completely hold the result accordingly through harmlessness itself. Thus, for the time being, focusing on sentient beings is established through four causes. Focusing on the Dharma means that one follows all, and following all itself is as many as there are ordinary beings and trainees who engage in the desire, form, and formless realms. What is the Dharma? It is that which is nominally designated as sentient beings. Focusing on that is called extremely cultivated, well...
