Flattering is called flattering because it binds the mind with desires such as seeking and obtaining gain, and speaks flatteringly to others in that way, speaking completely, in order to engage in false flattery related to the fruit of the desired meaning. Persuasion is called persuasion because, in order to obtain, one subtly performs the act of obtaining through persuasion regarding this or that object. For example, "This begging bowl is beautiful!" or "This Dharma robe!" or "This woolen cloth!" or "This bedding!" or "This crooked key is good!" or "This utensil is good!" If I were to obtain something like this, I should keep it, but it is difficult to find a donor!" Having gone to any house, one says there, "Your rice is good! This food is good! This clothing is good! Your food or provisions are good! In the past, you have given to us, and if we were also given by you, that would be truly wonderful. Now, do you not consider giving to us or doing something?" Like this, expressing any unclear words, the act of persuasion arising from greed, speaking about this or that object, is called persuasion. Measuring by gain is called measuring by gain because here some people strive to obtain, and binding their minds with desires such as seeking gain, they say to others, "You should not give to your mother, nor to your father, nor to your sister, nor to any other relatives or kinsmen. Then to whom will you give?" Having gone to anyone's house, one says again to that person, "If you go to your house, an Arhat resides in that house, do not be like you. Living together with an Arhat, sitting together, and speaking related words, then you have obtained great benefit, you have obtained good wealth, your attainment as a human is meaningful!" He thinks like this, and one should also make him think like this, "In my house, I do not allow any Bhikshu or Brahmin to enter except for the noble one, and this noble one, if

thinking that they are Arhats. Wherever they find gains, they bind their minds with attachment to those gains, and proclaim such things to others, which is called measuring (others) by gains. With contentment, one can abandon the desire for gains through gains. What is seeking gains through gains? Here, someone, whether a king, a great minister of the king, a Brahmin, a householder, or anyone else, if there is a donation of a bowl, Dharma garment, mat, crooked key, bedding, or any other possession, they take it all, praise and select others, saying, 'So-and-so great king or holy person has given me the best.' Thinking, 'If they also give to this noble one and make offerings, why shouldn't I also give to the noble one and make offerings?' This is called seeking gains through the gains of others. The faultless conduct of a Bodhisattva, in terms of the path, is taught with reference to the path of seeing. To abide in the irreversible ground means that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who wishes to abide in the irreversible ground should strive in the Perfection of Wisdom, which is what was said. If that is the case, then following the Sutra Requested by Ratnachandra and the Sutra of the Jewel Garland, (reciting:) Bhagavan Auspicious Virtue, Auspicious Virtue, and Chandana Virtue, Chandana Virtue, and also Infinite Light Adornment Virtue, known as Perfectly Awakened One, Crest Virtue, Crest Virtue, and Sorrowless Virtue and All Sorrowless Virtue, Jewel Offering Virtue, Jewel Offering Virtue, and Sugata Flower Virtue, Victorious One's Play of Three Efforts, Play of Three Efforts, Light Virtue, Light Virtue, Bhagavan Quality Virtue, Quality Virtue Ocean.

It is said that all those who hear the name of the Blessed One Shakyamuni Buddha will become non-retrogressing, and so on. If diligence in this Prajnaparamita is different from being the cause of abiding in the stage of non-retrogression, then how is that? This teaching has a hidden meaning. As it is said, the Tathagatas, seeing that sons of good families generate the seed of non-retrogression from hearing the name, therefore give predictions of non-retrogression to sentient beings, but it is not that they become non-retrogressing at the moment of hearing the name. Son of good family, for example, some trees whose seeds themselves have become special seeds, and those transformed seeds are also free from all faults of seeds, and the causes of this seed's growth are assembled, therefore sprouts are produced. Son of good family, how should that be called a seed? Blessed One, it should be called complete because it has abandoned all the faults of the seed. Son of good family, similarly, just by hearing the name, one possesses the seed of non-retrogression, therefore it is said that all sentient beings will not regress from the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Therefore, just diligence in the Prajnaparamita is sufficient to be the cause of non-retrogression. What is the stage of non-retrogression? It is the eighth Bodhisattva stage, therefore it is said that the wisdom of non-retrogression is non-retrogressing, so it is called the stage of non-retrogression, because wisdom does not regress. What is meant by being born into the Buddha lineage is this: those who wish to be born into the Buddha lineage, and so on. Here, some say that the Buddha lineage depends on truth, generosity, wisdom, and peace. Others say that because the Buddhas give birth to Buddhas, it should refer to the six paramitas. Still others say that because the Buddha is born in this way, Prajnaparamita is the mother of the Buddhas, and skillful means is the father of the Buddhas, and from these two the Buddha is born.
