If asked: If there is no manifest attachment for a while, then since there is none, there is no need for an antidote. If it is not manifest attachment, then it would become the eye, etc., there is this fault.\ Just as it is inconsistent, so it is manifest attachment; just as it is an antidote, so it is not manifest attachment. Again, if asked: How is it inconsistent? It is the grasping of existence and non-existence caused by untrue conceptualization. If asked: How is it an antidote? In any case, those do not exist. Again, if asked: How do those not exist? When the venerable Shariputra was asked whether something that is not mind could be an object of perception as existing or not existing, he asked back, "On which mind does the so-called absence of mind exist?" This was answered with 'no place' and 'no knowledge.' Showing the objects of the truths of cessation and path, and the differences in aspects, manifest attachment to manifesting and cultivating cessation and path is a fault. The sutra says: 'This cessation should be manifested; with this, cessation should be manifested; this path should be cultivated; with this, the path should be cultivated and there should be no manifest attachment,' and so on. Among these, 'in this way' refers to the four aspects spoken of for each of the truths, such as suffering and origin. 'With this' refers to the limbs of enlightenment that are the cause. With this, cessation and path are spoken of as the door to liberation without characteristics, and there are three kinds of characteristics: the characteristic of manifest attachment to be cultivated and not to be cultivated for all defilements and pure dharmas, the characteristic of abiding in the training for what should be practiced and what should not be practiced, and the characteristic called skillful means and unskillful means for the perfections such as generosity and non-perfections, etc. From those, the absence of characteristics is clearly shown in a reversed manner. For all defilements and pure dharmas, one should cultivate, one should not cultivate, one should practice, one should practice

and what is not to be trained, what is to be trained, what is not to be trained, and the perfections such as giving. To be skilled in what is other than these perfections, and what is not skilled in means, and attachment, and superior abiding, and attention, is craving for the Dharma that is in accordance, which is called a fault. The sutra for this is: This is all affliction. This is purification. These Dharmas should be cultivated. These Dharmas should not be cultivated. This should be practiced. This should not be practiced, from what is called without attachment, and so on. It is craving for this Dharma of accordance of thought. What is called accordance is craving for the Dharma that enters into custom, what is called affliction is a synonym. If one thinks about what is to be understood as the fault of this Bodhisattva, it is because it is the opposite characteristic of that which is without fault. Starting from not seeing the outer emptiness correctly following the inner emptiness. It is taught that all emptinesses separately prevent seeing each other. The sutra for this is: He does not see the outer emptiness correctly following the inner emptiness. He does not see the inner emptiness correctly following the outer emptiness, and so on. It is taught by making the characteristic of completely cutting off all signs of pride, in the power of the path. The aggregates such as form, and the perfections, and the aspects of enlightenment, and correct knowledge, and powers, and fearlessnesses, and the unmixed Dharmas of the Buddha, and the pride of knowing even the mind of enlightenment and its name are prevented. The sutra for this is: One should train like this, form
