Because it is coarse thinking. Also because the limbs are weak, having seen such faults, one should contemplate the peace of the second dhyana. In order not to completely grasp the first dhyana, and in order to attain the second, for the sake of the limbs, thinking is coarse, and one abides near the peace of investigation and so forth. This is not to abandon the coarse limbs, nor to attain the peaceful limbs, and to take that as a reason, but repeatedly contemplating "earth (ས་, पृथ्वी, pṛthvī, earth)" is to establish it in the all-pervading place. Similarly, for the nine all-pervading places such as water, one should observe in this way. For those who have previously cultivated familiarity, the all-pervading water will arise merely in rivers, ponds, puddles, and so forth. Similarly, in places where forests are burning and thick smoke is spreading, it is the all-pervading fire. For the light moved by the wind and the leaves of vines and so forth, universally observing that the wind is the excellent mover of this place, this is wind. For the laid out blue flowers, jewels, clothes, and so forth, it is the all-pervading blue. If those become yellow, red, white, it is the all-pervading yellow and so forth. Pigments, namely earth, wind, and the moon disc, and so forth, are the all-pervading white. Observing the circles of light produced by the moonlight and sunlight entering through star holes and so forth on the walls and the ground, and the spots of moonlight and sunlight produced on the four grounds only from the gaps in the clusters of tree leaves, this is the all-pervading consciousness. In star holes and wall gaps and so forth, the all-pervading space will arise. For those who have not previously cultivated familiarity, it will not arise in that way for beginners, therefore one should know the difference of such purification. Therefore, without the distinction of colors such as blue, with the stainless water falling from the sky, or the water dripping from a completely pure water filter, filling any container such as a bowl or vessel with those waters, abiding in a suitable place and being comfortable.

One should begin to practice mindfulness in a quiet place. This is the complete purification of water. Cut oily and pithy wood into small pieces and pile them up near a tree or in a guest room, without them touching each other, like laying bricks. Make holes the size of a span and four fingers all around, and spread a leather or rough cloth cushion in front of it. Sit comfortably, visualizing wood and grass below, birds flying above, and a thick fire burning in the middle, taking this as a reason. This is the complete purification of fire. If not, it can also be done by sitting near a hole in the wall, or a hole in the window, or nearby. Focus your memory on whichever direction of your limbs feels the touch of the wind. This is the complete purification of wind. Fill the area by spreading out blue lotuses, girika flowers, and other bouquets, as well as bright stamens, clothes, vessels, blue jade, and other things. Or, stretch a blue cloth like the surface of a large drum, and paint or not paint a mandala on it with any color such as nilakampa, blue palasha, or blue eye medicine, and surround it with different colors, even dark ones. Sit comfortably on a comfortable cushion between it and the sunlight, and begin to practice mindfulness. This is the complete purification of blue. The same method applies to the complete purification of yellow, red, and white. The difference here is that whatever is blue is regarded as yellow and other colors in those cases. Also, light an oil lamp inside a vase, seal the opening, and make a small hole in it. Place it facing the wall, and visualize the mandala of appearance created on the wall by the light of the oil lamp, and let it remain for a long time. This is the complete purification of consciousness. In a place covered with walls, rough cloth, or felt, make a hole the size of a span and four fingers, and begin to practice mindfulness. This complete enclosure is the complete purification of space. Thus, for the time being, these are the distinctions of purification.

It should be known. Whether done or not, the depletion, in all nine of those, also produces two characteristics called grasping and appearance. Among them, the characteristic of grasping the depletion of water is: the state of mixing foam and bubbles, becoming like a shaking appearance, and then abiding closely. If effort is made in this, that fault can be abandoned, but if not, it is a fault. If not, it is considered a fault of depletion. The characteristic of appearance is: like a jewel wind banner abiding in the sky, or like a mandala of a jewel-natured mirror, becoming a completely unmoving appearance, and then abiding closely. The characteristic of grasping the depletion of fire is also: like breaking and falling, shaking, abiding closely. If not, then here depletion will cause faults and contradictions, and ashes, embers, dust, and smoke, etc., will abide slightly, slightly closely. The characteristic of appearance is: like a red garment abiding in the sky, or like a golden wind banner, or like a golden hat, abiding closely. The characteristic of grasping the depletion of wind is: becoming like the steam rising from freshly boiled milk, and then abiding closely. The characteristic of appearance is: becoming unmoving like sitting still. The depletion of blue is: like a flower without pistils and stems. Pistils and stems, etc., and making another petal, this is called the fault of depletion. The characteristic of appearance is: because it surpasses the mandala of depletion, it appears in the sky like a jewel wind banner. The same principle applies to the depletion of yellow, etc. The characteristic of grasping the depletion of consciousness is: becoming like a mandala that has grown on the earth or a wall. The characteristic of appearance is: like a dense collection of appearances that is very clear. The characteristic of grasping the depletion of space is: becoming like a hole with a beginning, such as the edge of a wall, etc., and even if it arises, it will not increase, and the characteristic of appearance is: becoming like the center of space, and then abiding closely, and if it arises, it will increase. Thus, here one should know the difference between the grasping and appearance characteristics of depletion, whether done or not. These nine characteristics all abide in comfort.
