Thus he spoke. Here, because of having few desires, four things are abandoned: namely, pretense, flattery, ingratiation, and measuring by gain. What is pretense? That is, here, some people seek gain as their purpose, desiring gain, respect, and offerings, with a mind of dependence and connection, relying on monasteries, broom piles, or the same cushion, and any other place where virtues have been cultivated. When they abide there, they think: Wouldn't it be better if others would serve, respect, offer, and remember me? Wouldn't it be better if I could achieve gain, respect, and offerings? They think in this way, seeking gain and respect as their purpose, desiring gain, etc., acting in such a way with their inherent behavior, this is called pretense. What is flattery? That is, here, some people, relying on gain and respect, say to others: You are like my mother, father, brother, any relative, and future in-laws. Please also give to me, and we will also give to you. Please do this, and we will also do it for you. I have come to you from afar, and my staying here is also for your sake. They speak in this way, becoming beloved. Striving for gain, desiring gain, etc., with a mind of dependence, speaking flattering words to others in such a way, completely speaking, striving, connecting with flattering words, doing flattering deeds, this is called flattery. What is ingratiation? That is, here, some people separately examine, relying on gain, acting as the object and its cause. For example, saying: Your begging bowl is beautiful! Or: Dharma robe, meditation mat, bedding, crooked key, or: This and that of your belongings are good! If I could find something like this, I should keep it. Or: It is difficult for the donor to find it! Or going to any house, there

They also say things like, "Your rice is good! Your beans are good! Your monastic robe is good! Your clothes are good! The food you prepare or eat is good! In the past, you used to give to us and accomplish things for us, and we were happy with your giving and accomplishment. But now, you don't seem to want to give to us or accomplish things for us." Like speaking in this way, examining those things separately, and stating the reasons for those actions of flattery that arise from greed, that is called flattery. What is called "definitely showing" is when some people, seeking gain, with desires and attachments such as greed for gain, with attached minds, say to others, "You should not give to your mother, nor to your father, nor to your sister, nor to any relatives or future in-laws. Who are you going to give to, or what are you going to do?" Going to some houses, they also say, "An Arhat has entered your house, and you have met with the Arhat, lived together, and talked together. You are endowed with gain! You have obtained good gain! You have obtained good wealth! Being human is also meaningful!" They think, "No other renunciant or Brahmin has entered our house except for this noble one, so this noble one must be an Arhat." Thinking like that is also possible. Seeking gain, with desires and attachments such as greed for gain, definitely proclaiming to others in that way, that is called "definitely showing." Contentment is what satisfies the desire for gain with gain. What is called seeking gain with gain is when some people, whether they are kings, ministers of kings, Brahmins, householders, or any other noble person, use a begging bowl, Dharma robes, patched clothes, a crooked key, or
