Is it clothing? Is it a felt blanket? Is it bedding? Is it a crooked key? These utensils of yours are good. If I were to find something like this, I should keep it, because it is difficult to find a donor as well. Going to any household, one might say, "Your rice is good, your beans are good, your monastic robe is good, your clothing is good, what you have prepared or what you eat is good." In the past, you have given and helped us, and we were happy with your giving and help. Now you do not intend to give or help us. Like this, examining each separately, the act of flattery arising from greed, stating that that thing is the reason for that thing, this is called flattery. "Clearly showing" means that some people, seeking gain, because of desiring gain and so on, with attachment, say to others, "Do not give to your mother, nor to your father, nor to your sister, nor to any relatives or future in-laws. To whom will you give, or what will you do?" Going to some houses, one might say, "An Arhat has entered your house, and you have met, lived, and talked with an Arhat, you are so fortunate! You have obtained good gain, you have acquired good wealth, your life has become meaningful!" They might think, "No other renunciant or Brahmin has entered our house except for this noble one, so this noble one must be an Arhat." What is wrong with thinking like that? Seeking gain, because of desiring gain and so on, with attachment, clearly proclaiming to others in that way, this is called "clearly showing." Contentment is using gain to satisfy the desire for gain.

Yes. Among them, the so-called "seeking gain with gain" means that here, some people, whether they are kings, ministers of kings, Brahmins, householders, or any other noble person, donate alms bowls, or Dharma robes, or cushions, or keys, or mats, or any other utensils, and show off to others, saying, 'This has been completely accepted.' And they say, 'This was given to me by such and such a great king or other holy person.' They think in their hearts, 'These people should also be like this, and for the time being, they should also make offerings to the noble ones like that, or accomplish some kind of undertaking.' Why don't we also think about making offerings to the noble ones or accomplishing some kind of undertaking?' Thinking like this, they think in their hearts, 'Why not?' Therefore, with the gains they have obtained, they greedily seek and desire the gains of others, and this is what is called "seeking gain with gain." If you ask, when generating Bodhicitta, what is the connection with impure things and so on? This is to know that generating Bodhicitta is a non-retrogressive Dharma. There are nine causes that lead to its complete regression, namely: attachment to sexual love, strong desire, not knowing satisfaction, not knowing satisfaction, especially liking noise, laziness, forgetfulness, distraction, perverse wisdom, and especially liking elaboration. In order to counteract these, impure things and so on are taught. Similarly, for other aspects such as the mindfulness of exhaling and inhaling, it should also be explained according to the circumstances. In the fourth generation of Bodhicitta, what is said, "The Bodhisattva Mahasattva who, having seen all-knowingness, wants to cross over, wants to perfect the knowledge of the path, and wants to attain all-knowingness," among them, the vision of wisdom refers to the actualization of the Bodhisattva. The first ground is encompassed by the path of seeing, which refers to the meaning of "wanting to enter the faultless realm of the Bodhisattva." The ground of path knowledge, dwelling on the irreversible ground, refers to the meaning of "wanting to dwell on the irreversible ground." The irreversible ground is also the eighth ground of the Bodhisattva, that is: like this.
