Thus, there are four. Mindfulness is non-forgetfulness. Awareness is agitation and dullness. Attention is non-fabrication. Equanimity is fabrication. It is also through the abiding of mindfulness that one possesses awareness, and through the mind's manifest attention and absence of faults, one abides in equanimity, in that order. In terms of faculties and powers, these are the five, beginning with lack of faith. On the path of seeing, with the truths of suffering, origin, cessation, and path, there are ten to be abandoned in the desire realm, hence forty. Likewise, in the two upper realms, without anger, nine and nine are seventy-two, totaling one hundred and twelve to be abandoned. On the path of meditation, in the desire realm, there are six to be abandoned: the view of the aggregates as a self, the view of clinging to extremes that arise simultaneously, desire, anger, pride, and ignorance. Thus, in the two upper realms, except for anger, five and five are ten. Thus, in summary, what is to be abandoned by the path of meditation are sixteen afflictions. The means of abandonment is to abandon them in sequence with the path described above. Opposites that do not coexist, like light and darkness, abandon the great to be abandoned when the antidote is small, and abandon the small to be abandoned when the antidote is great. The result of abandonment is that, having abandoned the subtle traces of habit with the vajra-like samadhi, the second moment is called Buddha. Then, the third moment is called Perfectly Complete Buddha, the Dharmakaya, all qualities are complete, and all abilities are possessed. From that, through previous aspiration and compassion, two forms of the Form Body arise. Also, in the Akaniṣṭha heaven, in the pure land of Dense Array, the Enjoyment Body is shown, and the Emanation Body shows various forms according to what needs to be tamed. The former is intended for the close retinue, and the latter is the reality for those far away. There are two practices to be purified: during activities such as walking, one walks with mindfulness, and during periods of dwelling, one performs rituals such as prostrations, circumambulations, and mandala offerings. In the Great Vehicle's Stages of the Path, the Perfection of

This is the first chapter of the Stages of the Path. Having explained the stages of the path of the Paramita Vehicle, now I will correctly explain the stages of the path of the Secret Mantra Vehicle. The Great Vehicle of Secret Mantra is superior because it has special characteristics: many methods, no difficulties; sharp faculties, most excellent; for the sake of one purpose, even the ignorant, the treatises of mantra are especially excellent. Therefore, those who possess vows, etc., should be admitted, and those who do not possess vows should be abandoned. To violate those who possess vows is to be harmed by the dakinis, to die untimely, and to go to hell after death. It should also be known that admitting those who do not possess vows is the same. To criticize and revile the conduct of the Great Vehicle of Mantra is to be quickly killed by the dakinis, and then to be born in hell. Therefore, one should abandon criticizing and reviling the profound conduct. A qualified person, towards one who has become a supreme guru, generates bodhicitta, takes vows, receives empowerment, protects it, and understands its characteristics. Purifying the mind, purifying conduct, and the characteristics of the five rituals, are also present in the Lesser Vehicle, but because it is not the occasion, it is not mentioned here. This is a summary verse. Now I will explain it in detail. That is, first, a qualified person, towards a supreme guru, understands the ultimate conclusions of all vehicles, is proficient in the meaning of the tantras, and is proficient in the rituals of the mandala, etc., possesses great compassion, obtains permission from the guru, holds a feast gathering, offers offerings, and then prays. After praying in this way, the guru should also perform the practice, and the ritual of the ground, and especially the ritual of dwelling, and the extensive mandala ritual, entering, empowerment, and receiving offerings. After that, one should strive to protect, because the merits of protecting and the faults of not protecting have been explained clearly elsewhere, so I will not repeat them. In this way, having become a vessel, one should understand the characteristics of mantra from the supreme guru. Having understood that, one should purify the mind, because without purifying the mind, one cannot attain enlightenment, and without attaining enlightenment, one cannot accomplish the benefit of others, so one should purify the mind. This also has five branches: generating on the path and the tantra, and
