Homage to the Blessed One and his retinue! The Blessed One, together with the community of monks, descended from Vulture Peak Mountain to the plains for the benefit of the beings of the city of Vaishali. When they went to that great city of Vaishali, the people of Vaishali, having seen them, offered umbrellas, banners, flags, and assemblies of music to the Blessed Ones. In the streets of the city of Vaishali, between the streets, and outside the streets, there were flags, banners, umbrellas, garlands of flowers, pearls, strings of pearls, nets, half-nets, fans, whisks, white whisks, silk pendants, curtains, cushions covered with brocade, and auspicious vases filled with water were properly placed in the streets. The Licchavi people of Vaishali, being delighted by the arrival of the Blessed One, whether they were Licchavis, Licchavi wives, Licchavi sons, Licchavi daughters, Licchavi male servants, female servants, or relatives, were filled with joyful minds. To be free from all suffering is like a person who has been imprisoned and is released from prison, thus being free from suffering. The Blessed One is exceedingly beautiful, like a young maiden preparing to be married, or like the sun and moon rising in the summer sky. The stars are like the Shravakas and others, similarly enhancing the beauty of the Blessed One. Worthy of faith, like a beloved son who has gone to trade and, after a long time, meets his mother. The senses are pacified, like a Tirthika who is very arrogant and, having seen the face of the Blessed One, generates faith, or like being separated from the five desirable qualities. The mind is peaceful, like the mind not being distracted. The senses are tamed, which is to be separated from form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. The mind is tamed, which is to be separated from covetousness, malice, and wrong views. With taming and pacification, one abides in the conduct of a Shravaka. Having attained the supreme perfection, which is the ten perfections, of which generosity is for the sake of all sentient beings.
