It is not as it exists. The term "without object" means that it is not an object of focus, therefore it has no nature of being grasped. Why is that? Enlightenment is the nature of space, although it also has the nature of space, such as permanence, immutability, and emptiness, etc., but here it refers to the absence of inherent existence in grasping and being grasped. Therefore, as it is taught, there is nothing to be known or to be known. Knowing is grasping. What is to be known is what is to be grasped, because enlightenment has neither grasping nor being grasped. Why is that? Secret Lord, because enlightenment has no characteristics. It means that enlightenment has no characteristics such as blue and yellow colors, nor does it have characteristics such as color and shape. If it is said that understanding the mind as it is, including the absence of characteristics, is enlightenment, then isn't it also the case that understanding the phenomena other than the mind as they are? Just as understanding the mind as it is, it is taught that there is no characteristic, etc. All phenomena are also without characteristics, like space. Alternatively, enlightenment is without characteristics, which means that all phenomena are without characteristics, which is the nature of space. Here, phenomena refer to aggregates and so on other than the mind. For example, it is the nature of space, because space has no characteristics. Then, Vajrapani Bodhisattva asked the Blessed One as follows: Blessed One, where should the omniscient wisdom be sought? Where should perfect enlightenment also be sought? Up to the Secret Lord, this is the gate of purification of the Bodhisattva's enlightenment, called the gate of the appearance of phenomena, which is the first aspect of the appearance of phenomena. In order to seek omniscient wisdom and perfect enlightenment, he asked for the means of entering, and showed the means of seeking these two from one's own mind. Here, the so-called where to seek omniscient perfect enlightenment is asking how to enter. Enlightenment and omniscience should be sought from one's own mind, even to the point that one's own mind is the cause of grasping and being grasped.

Having abandoned the habitual tendencies and conceptual thoughts, when it is pure, it is naturally luminous. The unwavering self-awareness of each individual is the characteristic of the manifestation of wisdom, enlightenment, and becomes the nature of omniscience, that is its meaning. If one examines the mind, how can one understand this truth? There are two kinds of people who examine it: Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who possess wisdom that transcends the senses, and various different beings with inferior views. Among them, the examination spoken of for various different beings is: the mind is not found inside, outside, or in between. The outside is the object of grasping, the inside is the grasper, and in between, the mind cannot be found from anywhere in between those two. Those who possess wisdom that transcends the senses also have not found the mind in five kinds of things: color, shape, realm, lineage, and location. Therefore, from "it is not blue" to "it does not reside in the body, not in the mind, not in the eyes. It is not seen, nor will it be seen" it is said: not seen, means it has not been seen in the past and present times. Will not be seen, means it will not be seen in the future. From "it is not blue" to "it is not like the color of crystal" it refers to the mind not being an object that is seen like a color. From "it is not short" to "nor is it a hermaphrodite" it refers to not being like a shape. It is not the nature of the desire realm, nor is it the nature of the form and formless realms, it refers to not being seen like a realm. From gods, nagas, yakshas to not being the same nature as the kind of sentient beings, it refers to not being seen like a lineage. The mind does not reside in the eyes, to not residing in the mind, it refers to not seeing the mind residing in the six senses. The actual appearance of those things such as color and shape is: the mind has not separated from the nature of the object of grasping and the grasper, therefore it becomes defiled. Like this, because it is defiled, it is not the wisdom of omniscience. Therefore, the mind that has completely purified those defilements is omniscient.
