If someone says, "I have seen many differences in ascetic practices that are said to be undertaken," then seeing is true. However, why not do other things? For example, carrying bottomless pottery, bundles of grass, winnowing baskets, etc., on the neck, hands, and feet, which become burdens on the body, sorrows in the mind, and objects of worldly ridicule. If you say, "Anything that causes suffering to the body, etc., and results in worldly ridicule should not be done," then what should be done? If you say, "Only the rituals described in the scriptures that have the fruit of enjoyment and liberation, and have a definitive nature, are valid," then what is meant by "scriptures"? What are they like? They themselves are valid means of knowledge, so what is the nature of their definiteness? If you say, "If it determines, then it is definite," then what does it determine? Is it the body of the ascetic or the mind? For the moment, it is not the mind, because it is not reasonable to definitively determine the mind, which is pervasive and formless. This dharma is not corporeal and not pervasive. If you say, "Because it is related to the dharma mentioned above, it is of the body," then since bundles of grass, etc., which can be accomplished with little effort, are already available, why take bones, braids, staffs, and khaṭvāṅgas (Sanskrit: khaṭvāṅga), etc., which require great effort to accomplish? By taking those things, just like other independent people, those ascetics also become unfree. Since it has not been seen that those independent people can independently demonstrate the actions of the body, and that ascetics can do the same as sleeping comfortably and living comfortably, how can non-ascetics not be able to obtain the enjoyment that can be obtained merely by the limbs just mentioned through other efforts? If you say, "It is to obtain the position of the supreme king, etc.," then from the beginning of undertaking asceticism until the end of death, it has not been seen in any ascetic. If you say, "It is to obtain a vast land of extremely stable and infinitely diverse enjoyments, and through blessings, to become close to the desired deity, thereby constantly achieving it."

If someone says that enjoyment can be obtained at other times by other bodies, because perfect happiness is universally present, always feeling satisfied, and possessing characteristics different from other characteristics. Alas! The state of wanting to destroy the body due to the control of thought bound by hundreds of nets of evil desires, and being controlled by ignorance, is worthy of sorrow. Because those peacocks who seek immaculate water arising from charity, even though they are animals, if we analyze their inner happiness in detail, then what they do is for the sake of this body, therefore they should not be blamed. Ascetics, enjoying rock candy and sugar with their minds, will become happy, but the body will become different, which is like a flower in the sky. Because these are just beliefs, therefore remain silent. This reasoning prevents the asceticism of the perfect yogi. How does the scripture say it? Merely tormenting the body with asceticism does not bring merit, does not avoid harming others, and does not benefit others. Disrespecting the great vehicle of the Dharma of generosity, discipline, patience, and wisdom, and going to the wrong path of solitude, will only suffer the pain of the body. The limbs are painfully entangled, the solitude of samsara is terrifying, and the forest with infinite beings will attain extremely long suffering. What is said above. In the tantra called "Assembly of All the Gods," it says, what is the asceticism of the yogis like? Whenever all actions are performed with skillful means and without doubt, with a non-discriminating mind, this is the most supreme of all asceticism. What is asceticism? Constantly performing all actions with non-discrimination, in the nature of non-discrimination, this is the most supreme of all asceticism. With a non-discriminating mind, relying on objects, even if slandered, it will not be harmed in the slightest, this is the asceticism that is difficult to overcome. Whatever actions are done, they are determined by wisdom, and combined with emptiness, this is the asceticism of the great sovereign. Entering into wisdom, with a non-discriminating mind, acting without doubt, this is the asceticism of the great sovereign.
