Entering (the right path) is because one has obtained the merits of practice, abandoning worldly gatherings. Those who diligently strive to abandon desires and the like by meditating on impurity are those. In the Yogacara-bhumi of the Sravakas, how does one possess the merits of practice? Namely: the alms-gatherer, the diligent alms-gatherer, the one-session eater, the non-subsequent food taker, the three-robes wearer, the felt-robe wearer, the dust-cloth holder, the aranya-dweller, the tree-dweller, the un-sheltered one, the charnel ground dweller, the constant sitter, the wherever-dweller. These are the twelve or thirteen merits of practice that come from the stability of alms-gathering, robes, and dwelling. Among these, the alms-gatherer itself can be divided into two types: the alms-gatherer who takes what is obtained and the diligent alms-gatherer. The alms-gatherer who takes what is obtained is: in order to increase virtue, eating whatever is obtained and however it is obtained. The diligent alms-gatherer is: going from house to house, begging from the assembly of people, eating whatever is obtained and whatever is suitable, and thinking: I should obtain abundant, pleasant, and agreeable food from this, and then saying "Please give," without approaching the crowd. Therefore, if one does not distinguish alms-gathering, there are twelve; if one distinguishes, there are thirteen. So, what is the one-session eater? Namely: sitting in one place, eating until satisfied, and not eating again after getting up from that seat, this is called the one-session eater. What is the non-subsequent food taker? Namely: sitting down, not eating until everything is taken, knowing the extent to which one can be satisfied, and knowing that I do not need more food than this, and then taking everything before starting to eat, this is the non-subsequent food taker. How is one a three-robes wearer? Namely: possessing three robes, that is, the sanghati, uttarasanga, and antarvasa, and not possessing other robes besides these three, this is the three-robes wearer. How is one a felt-robe wearer? Namely: the three robes are not... robes.

Whoever wears more than three garments, whatever they may be, wears those made of wool, and not others; such a person is a wearer of felt garments. How is one a wearer of rags? One who wears garments given by others, or discarded, or found on the roadside, or at a crossroads, or at a three-way intersection, or abandoned and left on a wrong path, garments soiled by excrement or urine, or soiled by feces, urine, pus, blood, or menstrual blood, removes the impurities from these impure things, takes the essence, washes it clean, sews it up, changes the color, and then wears it; such a person is a wearer of rags. How is one a dweller in a solitary place? One who dwells especially in the last dwelling place of a forest hermitage, which is far from villages, cities, and towns; such a person is a dweller in a solitary place. How is one a dweller at the foot of a tree? One who relies on a tree and dwells at the root of a tree; such a person is a dweller at the foot of a tree. How is one without a covering? One who initially does not cover or conceal; such a person is without a covering. How is one a dweller in a cemetery? One who dwells in a cemetery where a crowd of people cremate the corpses of the dead; such a person is a dweller in a cemetery. How is one a constant sitter? One who sits squatting on a bed, a stool, or on the grass, and spends the time in that way, and does not lean his back or ribs against a bed, a wall, a tree, or a grass mat; such a person is a constant sitter. How is one a dweller wherever he lies down? One who sleeps on a grass mat or leaves, or on a mat of grass or leaves, just as it was well laid out the first time, and does not move or rearrange it again and again; such a person is a dweller wherever he lies down. Why are these called qualities of cultivation? For example, when wool is not yet spun, it is not soft, light, or workable; it is like being spun into yarn or made into a calf. When the spinning, beating, and shaking are completed, it becomes soft, light, and workable, just as it can be spun into yarn or made into a calf. Similarly, some are attached to alms, and therefore their minds are attached to alms...
