The Explanation of the Five Stages, Called "A Garland of Jewels." Nāgārjuna's Enlightenment. The Explanation of the Five Stages, Called "A Garland of Jewels." Nāgārjuna's Enlightenment. The Concise Meaning of the Five Stages. In Sanskrit: Pañcakramaṭīkāmaṇimālā nāma. In Tibetan: The Explanation of the Five Stages, Called "A Garland of Jewels." Homage to glorious Vajrasattva! He who is always of a joyful nature, strives greatly to liberate the three realms. With a multitude of pure and clear light wheels, he fills all of space. He is always surrounded by goddesses with flavors such as charm. Praise to that glorious Vajrasattva who is the conventional truth, indivisible. He delights in meditating on the abode of glorious Brahma, and is of the nature of the tathāgata-dhātu. He illuminates beings who are like illusions, dreams, mirages, and reflections of the moon in water. By the power of desire and skillful means, he holds the form of a youthful maiden in order to subdue all three realms without exception. Praise to the glorious Buddha-eyes and so forth, whose appearance is exceedingly beautiful. Having been harmed by objects such as difficult-to-tame forms, Having seen the world that is extremely attached to enjoyment, Having relied on the essence itself, he purifies. Homage to the supreme yoginis such as Rūpa-vajra. The multitude of views such as self obscures the essence of that. With compassion for the three realms, like the element of space, immaculate, He purifies that very preciousness all at once. I always pay homage to that collection of bodhicitta. Desiring to destroy the realm of immeasurable sentient beings, The hosts of māras such as the aggregates, who are like enemies and not friends, With compassion, he destroys the obstacles in an instant, with wrath, Homage to Yama, the terminator, and so forth. By whose kindness liberation is granted, The oceans of all the scriptures, The great guru who has reached the other shore, I pay homage to the lotus feet. First, having joined the palms, I beseech you. With one-pointed mind, O wise ones, Please do not abandon my samādhi. The essence of the great ocean of Guhyasamāja, Is auspicious, Like a jewel. The five stages are my words. Slightly practiced, not an object of experience. I, as if climbing a mound of clay, Desire to grasp the moon.

Is desire. The wise and great ones may find it laughable. However, relying on the supreme kindness of the feet of the Guru, and a little oral instruction, I will distinguish the essential points in order. Supreme Yoga and Unsurpassed Yoga, all abide in the four modes of explanation. For those who reveal meaning like sound, explaining will cause the lineage to degenerate. Therefore, relying on the six limits and the explanation, the four modes are practiced. Summaries and so on have all been summarized. Explanation complete. Furthermore, it was prophesied in the Lankavatara Sutra: Having understood the profound meaning of secret mantra, generating diligence to accomplish the perfect benefit of oneself and others, the glorious noble Nagarjuna Acharya, from the extremely profound ocean of the secret Kalachakra, adorned with the jewels of the two stages, has summarized the generation stage practices, such as the compilation of sadhanas. Because it is very difficult, the uncommon completion stage is taken as the main point, and the essence of numerous sutras and the king of tantras, as well as the five stages with reason, have been abbreviated and compiled for the sake of sentient beings with short lives, insufficient diligence, and narrow wisdom. Thus, in this age of strife, the extensive meaning of the ninefold teachings spoken by the Bhagavan cannot be grasped by present sentient beings through the stages of hearing, thinking, and meditating. Why is this? Because some sentient beings are controlled by others, such as the continuum of mind being controlled by faults such as desire. Some are pitifully drowning in the water gate of the power of women, wandering day by day relying on the suffering of samsara characterized by birth, old age, sickness, and death, thus wandering from one place to another. From the realm of hell to the realm of pretas, and from the realm of pretas to the realm of gods. When merit is exhausted, from the state of gods, they fall to the place of birth of animals. Again, having died from the place of birth of animals, they are reborn as humans. Without autonomy, driven by karma, beings revolve like a chariot wheel. As it is said. Similarly, some who are completely controlled by evil friends.
