This is the teaching. The analogy of a ladder is like a path to climb. Just as a person climbing the path of a ladder gradually reaches the towering top of a palace, so too, by meditating on the stages of Vajra recitation, one gradually purifies speech and so on, gradually attaining the state of the Great Vajradhara, the nature of constant joy, the nature of the path of no learning, and obtains the essence of the Dharmakaya. Mentioning the perfectly enlightened Buddha is to show that this is the word of a reliable person, just as it is. Now, in order to show what the collection of winds that is the basis of the stages of Vajra recitation is, it is said: 'The life of beings is the wind, the one called wind performs all actions, it is the mount of consciousness, it is the nature of five and also ten.' The meaning of what is said is this: the wind called life, which dwells in the heart, arises only from the mouth and nose and pervades all the realms of the world from the smallest mosquito to the peak of existence, this is life. What is it like? It is the life of beings, that is, the life of the four types of beings, like the life force. Is this one of the great elements? Or is it the nature of all? Therefore, it is said to be called wind. Wind is the nature of the great elements, having the characteristic of going, coming, stretching, and contracting. If that is the case, then the external wind should also be the same, because it is also the same as it, why should it not be grasped? To eliminate this question, it is said to be the mount of consciousness. Consciousness is the characteristic of seeing meaning, and there are eight types: the Alaya consciousness, the afflicted mind consciousness, and the six entering consciousnesses. Their mount is the driver, like a horse and a rider. Thus, the eight consciousnesses that reside within the body, which is the nature of the five great elements, no other action can be observed except for it, therefore, the consciousness that sees meaning.

That difference arises from the mind. Thus it is said. In the Abhidharma, it says: "Consciousness is the nature of the thought of self." Therefore, that which is merely of the nature of conceptualization, as long as it is not stirred by the wind element, it has no power to grasp objects. Just as a cripple cannot go to another place without a horse. Therefore, this is stirred by the wind and then grasps objects. If, when stirred by the wind, consciousness does not itself grasp objects, then how is it not contradictory to the sutras? In the Sutra Requested by Good Guardian, the Blessed One said: "Good Guardian, just as a wheel turns by the power of doing, so too, by the power of karma and conformity to karma, the wheel of the body moves. This realm of consciousness has various supports and objects. This realm of consciousness is the cause of producing the body, therefore it is the agent. This realm of consciousness is based on the realm of phenomena, therefore it is inexhaustible. Because it remembers the body of the previous support, this realm of consciousness is complete with intelligence. This realm of consciousness should be regarded as similar to the rays of the sun. For example, the rays of the sun shine on pus and rotten things, which are unpleasant odors, and also shine on pleasant odors such as lotuses, but it does not have the idea that 'this is a pleasant odor,' nor does it abandon the unpleasant odor and go to the sun. Similarly, this realm of consciousness takes birth in the birthplace of pigs and other creatures that eat impure things, but the realm of consciousness is not stained by those faults." If what is said is like this, it is true, and it will not contradict the sutras. Why? Because, consciousness is the cause of moving the body, and it is also because it is endowed with the vehicle of wind, one should follow this distinction. However, at the time of death, how does one wander to another birthplace separated from the five great elements? Because there is no wind at that time. If you say that, it should not be said like that.
