It is so. Then how is it known? It is known from the words "Then, the Blessed One said," and so on. Examining the meaning is examining the meaning, one should examine the cause, path, and result, and that should be done first. Not relying on letters is not examining letters, and not manifesting letters. Then, why not rely on letters? The answer is, following letters is clinging to letters. What will happen then? It will cause the meaning to be lost, and one will not understand other meanings either, which is beyond expressing the meaning. If one clings to letters, one will not understand that all dharmas are without self-nature. Why? Because expression and non-expression are mutually exclusive, like a horse and an ox. What is other than letters is the ultimate truth, and it cannot be known by relying on letters, as mentioned above. Therefore, letters are not the meaning. Then, isn't it that letters do not express the meaning? What is the function of this "letter"? No, because it is a symbol for expressing the true meaning. Then, will it express it? No, because what is to be expressed cannot be established. Then, what is its function? It exists as a symbol. What is a symbol to indicate? If it is said that it is not possible because it does not exist, that is not the case, because what is to be indicated is the non-thing itself. Then, is what is to be indicated also substantially existent? No, because even for what is non-existent, a thought of such an appearance arises, and what is to be indicated is what appears on what. Then, isn't that itself to be expressed? No, because what is to be expressed also cannot be established. Then, isn't what appears as a letter itself existent? Why is it said that it does not exist? No, because the letter is also just an appearance, naturally pure, like an image in a mirror. However, conventionally, it still exists as a nature that can function. Then, what is a symbol like? Some say, pointing at one thing with one finger, and so on. Indicating with a finger is like raising a finger to a child to indicate the moon, understanding the meaning is like understanding the moon in the sky. Understanding the sound is like understanding the finger as the moon.

Pointing at the moon with a finger is a simple way to make others understand. But it is not so with objects. Furthermore, sound is like a meaningless finger. Meaning lies in becoming meaningful, like the moon in the sky. Meaningless sounds cannot indicate it either, just like pointing at the moon with a finger. The rest is easy to understand. How many classifications of words are there? There are four, and the reason it is said that there are four is because there are four here. What are they? Such as "words of definition" and so on. Someone does not understand this and asks: What are words of definition? The answer is: That which arises from one's own conceptual thought clinging to the characteristics of form as signs, because the consciousness of form arises from four conditions. From this, the image of letters appears. From this, sound arises. Therefore, whatever exists upon something is called that thing. Then, what are the words in a dream? It is the recollection of previously experienced objects, that is, in a non-dream state, the imprints of the experienced objects exist in consciousness. These imprints are experienced in dreams. The words that arise from this, and the words that arise from objects that have not been experienced, that is, seeing objects in a dream that have not been seen before. The words that arise from this. Why is it called the word in a dream? Whether named in a dream or named after waking up, it is fine, because it arises from the dream realm, it is called the word in a dream. What are the words of clinging to the manifestation of the conceptual thought of negative states? It is the actions performed by sentient beings, that is, the virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral actions accumulated from beginningless time. These actions are perfumed by the imprints of one's own conceptual thought and arise from recollection. What are the words of beginningless time? The answer is: From beginningless time, clinging to the manifestation of elaboration, that is, from the time when space existed, one has named one's own form and so on and made them into objects, clinging to and craving them. Placing these imprints in one's own consciousness. After these seeds arise, one later recalls the object and one's own words arise. Because of this reason, it means "because of that reason," this is the reason of the scriptures. Sounds refer to the four types of sounds. From where
