is the teacher. Why is that? Because he thought that one language could not subdue any beings. Letters are also completely pure in the ultimate sense. How is that known? From what the Blessed One said, "From then on," and so on. Examining the meaning is examining the meaning, examining the cause, path, and result, and doing that first. Not relying on letters is examining letters, not manifesting letters. Why not rely on letters? The answer is that following letters is clinging to letters. What will that do? It will cause the meaning to be lost, and one will not understand others, which goes beyond expressing the meaning. If one clings to letters, one will not understand that all dharmas are without self-nature. Why is that? Because expression and non-expression are mutually exclusive, like a horse and an ox. What is other than letters is the ultimate truth, which cannot be known by relying on letters, as mentioned above. Therefore, letters are not the meaning. Then, do letters not express the meaning? What does this "letter" do? No, because it is a symbol for expressing the true meaning. Then, will it express it? No, because what is to be expressed cannot be established. Then, what does it do? It makes a symbol. What is a symbol supposed to indicate? If it is said that it is not feasible because it does not exist, that is not the case, what is to be indicated is the non-thing itself. Is what is to be indicated not real? No, even for what is unreal, a thought of such an appearance arises, and what appears as what is to be indicated. Then, is that itself not to be expressed? No, because what is to be expressed cannot be established either. Then, is the appearance of the letter itself not existent? Why is it said that it does not exist? No, the letter is also just an appearance, naturally pure, like an image in a mirror. However, in the conventional sense, it still exists as a nature that can function. What kind of symbol is it? Some say that pointing at one thing with one fingertip, etc., pointing with a fingertip is pointing a finger to a child.

If one points to the moon with a finger, then understanding the meaning is like understanding the moon in the sky. Understanding the sound is like pointing to the moon with a finger. Pointing to the moon with a finger is to easily convey knowledge to others. This is not the case for objects. Furthermore, for sound, it is like a meaningless finger. For meaning, it becomes meaningful, like the moon in the sky. Meaningless sounds also cannot indicate it, just like a finger pointing to the moon. The rest is easy to understand. Then, how many classifications of words are there? There are four, and the reason it is said that there are four is because there are four here. So, what are the four? For example, the word of definition and so on. Because they do not understand this, they ask: What is the word of definition? The answer is: It arises from clinging to one's own form, appearing as clinging to the characteristics of form. That is, the consciousness of form arises from four conditions. From this, the form of letters appears. From this, sound arises. Therefore, whatever exists in a place is called that. Then, what is the word of dream? Remembering the previously experienced object is when the habit of the experienced object exists in consciousness in a non-dream state. That habit is experienced in a dream. The word that arises from it, and the word that arises from the object of no thought, is seeing a previously unseen object in a dream. The word that arises from it. Why is it called the word of dream? Whether it is named in a dream or named after waking up, it is called the word of dream because it arises from the object of dream. What is the word of clinging to the conceptualization of a bad state? The actions performed by sentient beings are the virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified actions accumulated from beginningless time. These actions are completely imbued with the habits of their own conceptualization and arise from recollection. What is the word of beginningless time? The answer is that from beginningless time, clinging to elaboration is like when the sky exists, one names one's own form, etc., as objects, and clings to and is attached to it. Its habit remains in one's own consciousness. Its seed arises, and later one remembers the object and one's own word arises.
