So, how is it called? This is an illustration. The Buddha Bhagavan refers to Vairochana Buddha and so on, because he is both Buddha and Bhagavan. Buddha refers to someone who, like an awakened person, has awakened from the sleep of ignorance, and like a lotus flower opening, has understood all dharmas, and whose mind is open. The so-called Bhagavan, in the Shravaka Vehicle, refers to the one who has conquered the four maras, namely: the leakage of ignorance is exhausted, and the mara of afflictions is conquered, because all afflictions arise from ignorance. The leakage of existence is exhausted, and the mara of death is conquered, because the suffering of formation is abandoned, so it is free from desire. The leakage of views is exhausted, and the mara of aggregates is conquered, because the aggregates of close grasping are the view of the perishable collection. The leakage of desire is exhausted, and the mara of the son of the gods is conquered, because the inverted desire is abandoned. Having conquered the four maras in this way, he possesses the wisdom of exhaustion and non-arising. Or, in the Bodhisattva Vehicle, poverty, evil destinies, ugly appearance, no fame, no power, and ignorance are conquered in sequence by the six paramitas, thereby possessing the fruit of freedom, supremacy, beauty, fame, power, and wisdom. Or, in the Tathagatagarbha's Yogacara, with suchness and the ten powers manifested, the alaya consciousness and the obscuration of knowledge are conquered, thus possessing mirror-like wisdom; with the manifestation of the four fearlessnesses of the true limit, the afflicted mind and the obscuration of afflictions are conquered, thus possessing equality wisdom; with the manifestation of distinct correct knowledge without characteristics, the discriminating consciousness and the karmic obscuration are conquered, thus possessing discriminating awareness wisdom; with the manifestation of ultimate truth and great compassion, the entering consciousness and the obscuration of birth are conquered, thus possessing accomplishing wisdom. These four are the wisdom of exhaustion, therefore, birth is non-birth, is the nature of the wisdom of knowing non-birth, is the wisdom of the dharmadhatu. The Madhyamaka of Tathagatagarbha is two

Having destroyed all obscurations of knowledge, etc., with unsurpassed wisdom, and possessing non-conceptual wisdom, hence, the Bhagavan. This has four possibilities: The first possibility is those who are Buddhas but not Bhagavans, namely, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, because they do not practice the six perfections such as generosity, and do not possess the six excellences. The second possibility is those who are Bhagavans but not Buddhas, namely, the Bodhisattvas of the ten bhumis, because they have not abandoned samsara due to the power of compassion. The third possibility is those who are both, namely, the Tathagatas, because they have reached the ultimate perfection of the perfections and have entered into non-abiding nirvana. The fourth possibility is those who are neither, namely, ordinary beings. Therefore, the Tathagata should be understood from the term that combines the two words Buddha and Bhagavan. The term "Mahabodhisattva" means both Bodhisattva and Mahasattva, so one instance of the word "sattva" is omitted, and it is referred to as Mahabodhisattva. Here, Bodhi is the wisdom that knows all aspects. Because the mind that meditates on it is firm, it is a Sattva, and it is distinct from the Tirthikas because it accumulates the collection of wisdom. "Great" means doing great benefit for limitless sentient beings, and it is distinct from the Shravakas because it accumulates the collection of merit. Alternatively, it is also because they possess seven qualities greater than the mother: namely, being supreme among great beings, cutting off the wrong views of the great realm of beings, and also generosity, intelligence, great power, abiding in the Great Vehicle, and wearing great armor to defeat the Maras. This also has four possibilities: those who are not Bodhisattvas and not Mahasattvas are the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, because they do not work for the benefit of sentient beings. Those who are Mahasattvas but not Bodhisattvas are the Tirthika teachers, the great gods, because they have not abandoned the afflictions. Those who are both and those who are neither are as previously stated. Thus, Mahabodhisattva refers to those on the ten bhumis. "Those" refers to the Buddhas, Bhagavans, and Mahabodhisattvas. Bodhi is the great vow.
