A Detailed Explanation of the Commentary on the Mind of Enlightenment By Nagarjuna A Detailed Explanation of the Commentary on the Mind of Enlightenment By Nagarjuna Introduction In Sanskrit: Bodhicitta-vivaraṇa-ṭīkā. In Tibetan: A Detailed Explanation of the Commentary on the Mind of Enlightenment. Neither one nor many, having known and abandoned all concepts, the nature of the teacher, possessing great compassion, having paid homage, this detailed explanation is made. It is not composed out of arrogance or desire for fame and gain, but with faith, this small part is done, may the wise ones tolerate criticism. Here, the introduction to this is: The teacher, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, the path of the Mind of Enlightenment praised by the Vajra, the Bodhisattva yogi who practices for the benefit of father and mother, the method of meditating on the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Mind of Enlightenment, from the king of tantras, the Guhyasamaja. Therein, the root of the oral instructions such as "separate from all things" is taught. Its summarized meaning is: the ultimate Mind of Enlightenment, and the vow to meditate on it, the conventional Mind of Enlightenment, and the method of realizing the two. Among these, there are four stages in the order of meditating on the ultimate Mind of Enlightenment: By knowing "separate from all things," the teaching refutes the views of the heretics; by "aggregates, elements, sources, the grasped and the grasper are empty," the teaching refutes the views of the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas; by "no self of phenomena, equality," the teaching refutes the views of the Cittamatrins; by "one's own mind is primordially unborn, the nature of emptiness," the teaching establishes and posits the views of the Madhyamikas; and "how the Buddha, the Bhagavan," etc., shows the vow to meditate on the ultimate Mind of Enlightenment. In generating the conventional Mind of Enlightenment, with the four phrases such as "the meaning of liberating beings who have not been liberated," it shows liberating the three lower realms, gods, humans, Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas in order. There are also two methods of realization: Aspiration, such as "like this," etc., is the conventional Mind of Enlightenment; Meditation, such as "the ultimate truth," etc.

That is, the ultimate bodhicitta. Thus, there are eleven fundamental meanings. Summary: Now, in order to understand its meaning in detail, the explanation begins with "Then." That is, where? By whom? From where? What? For what purpose is it done? On Mount Śrīparvata, the venerable Nāgārjuna, from the Guhyasamāja Tantra, summarized the Madhyamaka view as the two bodhicittas, ultimate and conventional. The necessity is to eliminate the views of outsiders and to emphasize the wisdom and compassion of no self-nature. When the words are few, in order to clearly express the meaning, the explanation is done in order. Thus, for those who prioritize conceptualization, it is shown with five arithmetic beginnings. There are fifteen divisions, namely, prostration, the meaning of head and feet, vowing to explain, emphasizing the meaning of ultimate bodhicitta, explaining separation from all things, explaining abandoning the aggregates, etc., explaining the equality of no self of phenomena, explaining one's own mind not arising, etc., emphasizing the meaning of conventional bodhicitta, and the four meanings of explaining the liberation of sentient beings who have not been liberated, etc., the qualities of the two bodhicittas, and the dedication of merit. Among them, the meaning of prostration is explained from "bodhicitta." The meaning of head and feet is "cultivating bodhicitta destroys existence," and so on. Vowing to explain is from "I explain," and so on. Emphasizing the ultimate bodhicitta is from "I and," and so on. Explaining separation from all things is from "outsiders," and so on. Explaining the aggregates and the four, etc., is from "world lord," and so on. Explaining the equality of no self of phenomena is from "mind only this," and so on. Explaining one's own mind, etc., is from "unmarked, unborn," and so on. Emphasizing the meaning of conventional bodhicitta is from "when practicing like this," and so on. The explanation of liberating the unliberated is from "with what intention," and so on. The explanation of the unliberated is from "liberating sentient beings," and so on. The explanation of relief is from "Mahayana," and so on. Release from suffering.
