Thus it is said. What is that? It is said to be teaching to the assembly and secondly, teaching to the disciples. Thus it is said, and among them, what is teaching to the assembly? Why is it called teaching to the assembly? Thus it is said, like the sound of truth and so on. The sound of truth is the sound of truth. Likewise, the interval of general meaning is teaching to the assembly. Why? Because it is the vessel for that, therefore it is called that. How many kinds of teaching to the disciples are there? Why teach to the disciples? Thus it is said, like the sound of untruth and so on. These five kinds of untruth and so on are teaching to the disciples. Why? Because it is the vessel for that. Having taught these two kinds, now, in order to show the difference of individuals, it is said, "Desiring to listen at all times." It means the individual who desires to listen at all times and in all ways. How many kinds are there? It is said, "From the immeasurable differences of mind, individuals are considered to be five kinds." Thus it is said, although there are immeasurable kinds, in terms of metaphor, it becomes five kinds. What are the five kinds? Who said it? It is said, "Blue lotus and white lotus, lotus, sandalwood, and jewel, their natures are different, their names are different, the all-knowing one said so." Among them, what is the individual of the blue lotus? Why is it considered the individual of the blue lotus? It is said, "He has heard everything completely, and is very skilled in holding." It means that all sutras and treatises have been heard completely, that is, everything has been heard completely. He is very skilled in holding, meaning that he comprehends everything just by hearing. It is said, "He forgets in an instant," meaning that he forgets as soon as he is separated from the guru. What is his name? It is said, "The individual of the blue lotus." Thus it is said, because he is similar to the blue lotus, he is like the individual of the blue lotus. What common dharma does the name blue lotus have with this? Thus, the name blue lotus opens when the sun rises, but when the sun sets, it has no dharma to open. What is the individual of the white lotus? It is said, one should hear much that can be grasped.

Yang. It means, although the voice of the Tathagata is heard immeasurably, it is so. The teacher is also incapable, meaning it is beyond thought and speech. Like cotton seeds in a vase, it means, like putting cotton seeds in a vase, it cannot be shown. Like a white lotus person, it means, like a white lotus not attached to water. Who is the person named Lotus? Possessing faith and knowing compassion. And so on, this word "possessing" should be connected to everything. One who possesses faith means desire, joy, and belief. Whoever possesses them means not being separated from them, that is, possessing them. One who possesses compassion means not being separated from great compassion. One who possesses wisdom means not being separated from great wisdom. Having heard, the mind opens wide, meaning the mind is broad. Listen like a seamless light, meaning listen like a seamless light. This means one should listen at all times, and abandon practice, teaching, etc. What is its name? It is said to be a person named Lotus. Seamless means like a lotus blooming. Who is the so-called sandalwood person? Hearing little and having pride. And so on, saying that hearing little means not hearing. One who has pride means saying that I have heard. Speaking much without roots means speaking various things before definite understanding arises. Unable to follow, meaning that one cannot hold on to it later. What is its name? It is said to be a person named Sandalwood. Like sandalwood, it is like a sandalwood person, like the sandalwood of the Himalayas. One who has pride is like the sandalwood of summer. That's it. Speaking much without roots, this means like the sandalwood of Mount Vadola. Unable to follow, meaning like sandalwood with a snake's heart. These indicate a sandalwood-like person. Then, a jewel-like person is shown, with pure morality and virtuous.
