It is because it is the basis. All dharmas are gathered in one place. If one were to write this with pigments and dust, what would be the use? For the yogi, these are the words of mantras, and for mantras, the basis of the most supreme abiding is all words. Among all these words, the one that uniquely possesses consonants such as ka, that is what the mantra practitioner should write here, as it is said (in the sutra). If asked, what is the basis of the most supreme abiding of mantras? (The sutra) mentions "After combining Āli and Kāli." Āli and Kāli are expressed using the verb's word class. Therefore, one should observe Āli and Kāli. The thirty-four letters approximated by the letter a are represented by the sound of Āli. Those vowels and letters are Āli, Kāli, and so on. Āli Kāli is Āli Kāli, and combining means being mutually consistent. Absorbing into the categories, the categories mentioned here are the establishment of collections. From a to āḥ is the first category. From the letter ka to nga, the eight that begin in this way are the eight categories. A ka ca ṭa ta pa ya śa, etc., are the various categories. Absorbing Oṃ (Tibetan: ཨོཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ओ, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Oṃ), Phaṭ (Tibetan: ཕཊ, Sanskrit Devanagari: फट, Sanskrit Romanization: phaṭ, Literal Chinese meaning: Phaṭ), and Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Hūṃ) into the various categories means establishing them in the manner of the various categories. If asked, how and in what classification manner do these two, Āli and Kāli, combine to become categories? (The sutra) mentions "One should know four fours as a group." Superimposing four as a group, that is four fours, which is sixteen or thirty-two. Therefore, combining means removing nga and nya, resulting in two sixteens. If forty-eight letters become categories, even then, this "four fours" does not indicate other category numbers, therefore there are only eight categories. The difference is this: four and four are four fours, one should know two fours as eight. If it becomes eight categories, then what should be done after that? (The sutra) mentions "The supreme Sage should be well distributed." For those eight categories, one should well distribute the supreme of the Sage. The Sage is thirty-six letters. Merely gathering those into the form of deities, and because it is the most supreme, therefore one should well distribute the supreme of the Sage. That is the meaning being conveyed. If one spreads out,
