Now it must arise. As it says in the Bodhicitta Commentary: Just as the sweetness of sugarcane, and the heat of the nature of fire, similarly, the nature of all phenomena is considered emptiness. Thus it is said, conventionality is emptiness, emptiness alone is conventionality. If it does not exist, it will certainly not arise, just like what is made and impermanence. So it is said. Thirdly, (371) here, establishing conceptualization and appearance is the same as establishing the selflessness of phenomena in the Sutra tradition. Among them, the conceptualization that arises from the mind is itself the appearing aspect of the mind, but for the sake of easy understanding, it is necessary to examine them separately. First, establishing conceptualization: the bodily posture and gaze, etc., are done as before. In the state of clear and empty mind, without any grasping, remain calmly for a moment without distraction. In that state, let a manifest, coarse, and intense conceptualization, such as anger, arise or intentionally cause it to arise. When it suddenly arises, stare directly at it. Examine the shape and color of that conceptualization, its location and basis, the grasping of its essence, and how its appearance is, in sequence, repeatedly as described before. If conceptualization does not arise, since there is no object to examine (372), relax slightly and think about enemies or others harming you, and then generate the conceptualization of anger towards them and examine it. In the same way, generate the conceptualization of desire towards the object of attachment and examine it, and so on, examine the coarse conceptualizations. Similarly, let any subtle ways of conceptualization arise or intentionally cause them to arise, and examine them as before. Having examined in this way, it is easy to realize that neither subtle nor coarse conceptualizations have any shape, color, location, basis, etc. However, if one returns to the state of clear and empty mind without conceptualization, that conceptualization itself will become self-purified, and although the mind will turn towards meditative equipoise, this does not completely cut off the clinging to conceptualizations. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the state in which the arising of conceptualization is not obstructed and is still clear. That is, for any conceptualization that arises, in the state where its manner of arising is not blocked or dissolved and is still clear, the activity of conceptualization, slightly different from the nature of the previous conceptualization (373), does not generate true grasping, and it is difficult to say that the grasping of its essence is like this.
