I, gods, nagas, yakshas, and so on, eighty kotis and so forth, also vowed to protect those noble beings, these circumstances are mentioned in the Samadhiraja Sutra. Furthermore, after the Buddha's nirvana, in the northern region, there will appear a person named "Bhikshu Sustenance," and many praises will be spoken of him, and he will cause the Buddha's teachings to be vast and widespread, and Ananda will be comforted by this. At the time of his death, he will immediately be reborn in the Pure Land of Amitabha, in a buddha-field called "World Adorned with Qualities," he will attain enlightenment as the Tathagata Immaculate Light, and so on, these are mentioned in the Karunapundarika Sutra. Moreover, in the northern region of Vajrasana, in the land of snow mountains, on the banks of the Maha Lohita River, in the rocky cave (219) lush with greenery, there is a Dharma-speaking bhikshu named "Sustenance," together with no fewer than five hundred attendants, enjoying the wisdom of the Tathagata, and so on, although many such prophecies have been spoken, I have not written them here for fear of prolixity, and if you are interested, you should look in those sutras. Thus, in accordance with these prophecies, in the northern region of Vajrasana, in the rocky cave lush with greenery in the place of Pal Daklha Gampo, Gampopa, known as Bhikshu Sustenance, appeared with no fewer than five hundred attendant disciples, and put into practice the essence of the Samadhiraja Sutra, the essential instruction of meaning called Mahamudra, and also widely propagated it to the disciples. Similarly, in accordance with the prophecy of the eight hundred bodhisattva Dharma speakers of the past who made vows, in the land of Tibet, many famous great siddhas, such as the disciples and grand-disciples of Matchless Dagpo, appeared (220), and they upheld, cherished, and propagated the essential teachings, so that throughout the entire snowy land of Tibet, the great sound of their fame shook the world, and even in other countries such as India, Nepal, China, and Mongolia, the name "Dakpo Kagyu" became widely known, and even in this degenerate age, there are still people who abandon their attachment to this life.

Establishing the banner of practice in terrifying charnel grounds, mountain bird nests, desolate wildernesses, and secluded borders, this is far more excellent than other lineages, and has become the focus of attention for all. I have briefly explained the conviction generated by these. Second, regarding the preliminary preparations for the stages of meditation, there are three points: the general order of the teachings (221), the preliminary distinctions of this very tradition, and the explanation of the preliminary practices at hand. The first is: In general, those who are weary of the suffering of samsara and seek liberation, entering the precious teachings of the Buddha and practicing the sacred Dharma, the order is: First, examine, investigate, seek, and rely on a qualified spiritual friend. Then, as the foundation for the arising of qualities, take the appropriate precepts of discipline and protect them accordingly. Generally, focus your mind on the words of the Buddha, and especially on the sacred Dharma, and listen carefully to the infallible path of the three types of individuals, such as the Stages of the Path, so that you do not turn back. The meaning of listening, if it only appears occasionally in the realm of understanding, is not enough, so think about it again and again. In this way, attachment to the appearances of this life (222) will be reversed from the root, and an extraordinary mind will arise that seeks the definite good of the next life. By examining and investigating the actions of those who claim to be practitioners, it is understood that some are side-dish Dharma, livelihood Dharma, preaching Dharma, and beautiful Dharma, and it is understood that these are not beneficial to the next life, and some are even harmful, so a desire arises to practice the Dharma properly. As Nagarjuna said: "Hearing is what increases wisdom; if there are both thinking and hearing, then one should diligently practice meditation; from that, unsurpassed accomplishment will arise." The Treasury says: "Abiding in discipline, possessing hearing and thinking, one should diligently practice meditation." The Stages of Meditation says: "First, one should generate the wisdom that arises from hearing; thereby one can temporarily grasp the meaning of the scriptures. Then, with the wisdom that arises from thinking, one can ascertain."
