Leading to abandoning worldly affairs, it is believed that liberation can be achieved through the single path of Mahamudra, without relying on the paths of exoteric and esoteric scriptures. Later Kagyu lineages, however, have adopted a method that integrates both exoteric and esoteric teachings. In the stages of maturation empowerment, preliminary practices, and intensification, various exoteric and esoteric practices are incorporated as appropriate. In this way, even if it is treated as a profound path common to both exoteric and esoteric teachings, it can meet the needs of many with superior, inferior, and middling intellects, and there is no conflict. Secondly, the teachings of the Buddhas (202), all Sutras and Tantras, are taught as methods for realizing the suchness, the reality of all phenomena. All their intentions are directed towards that suchness, the ultimate goal of practice is to lead to that suchness, and whatever profound and vast teachings are given are said to be directed towards that suchness. As the Sutra says: "All the teachings of the Tathagatas are directed towards suchness, lead to suchness, and manifestly point towards suchness." The Intermediate Stages of Meditation says: "All the words of the Bhagavan are well-spoken, whether directly or indirectly, they clearly reveal suchness and are directed towards it." Jowo Je says: "The eighty-four thousand collections of Dharma, all that is taught, are directed towards and lead to this Dharmata." Therefore, no Sutra or Tantra has been taught other than the means of realizing the emptiness of reality. (203) The Five Stages says: "In the various Sutras and Tantras, whatever is repeatedly indicated, is all about this emptiness, and nothing else is taught there." The Praise to the Remover of Obscurations praises the Bhagavan: "The Dharmas you have taught are originally peaceful and without arising, the wheel of Dharma of self-nature Nirvana, you turn it thoroughly." Like that. Thus, as a means of realizing emptiness, the two paths of Sutra and Tantra are taught. Among them, the essence of the Sutra path is generally the three of hearing, thinking, and meditating, and especially the practice of the six perfections. And the meaning of these is said to converge on meditating on reality, as the Vajra Samadhi Sutra says: "Without moving from emptiness, the six perfections

Thus it is said. In particular, the Sutra Requested by Mind says: Not thinking is generosity, non-difference is discipline, not discriminating (204) is patience, no acceptance or rejection is diligence, non-attachment is meditation, non-discrimination is wisdom. Also, as the Great Brahmin said: Reading is it, holding and meditating are also it, explaining the scriptures in the heart is also it. Also, as it is said in the 'Non-Abiding Tantra': If one eats the genuine food of non-fabrication, all schools will be satisfied. Children do not understand, they rely on nominal terms and words, everything is the nature of one's own mind. Thus it is said. Furthermore, the essence of the mantra path, the two stages are taught, and these actions are said to be for the purpose of combining contrived activities with the realization of uncontrived wisdom. The ultimate intention is non-contrivance, as it is said in the Vajra Dakini: In order to realize the true union, one should practice artificial meditation, one should recite artificial recitations, outside of artificial union, having realized the true union, one should not do artificial things. For example, just as grasping a boat, one can cross the other shore of the water, (205) and after reaching the other shore, one should abandon the boat, so it is with artificial things. Thus it is said. In the Vajra Heart Commentary, it says: Bound by the habitual tendencies of conceptual thought, one initially relies on the rituals of conceptualization, when one knows the nature of conceptual thought, one enters into non-conceptualization. Thus it is said. Therefore, in the suchness of non-contrivance, all the meanings of secret mantra yoga are completely stated, as it is said in the 'Two Examinations': In the nature of non-contrivance, mantras and deities truly abide. That is mantra recitation, that is asceticism, that is fire offering, that is mandala, that is the mandala itself. In short, the mind is a form of aggregation. Thus it is said. In the Secret Nectar King Tantra, it says: Offerings and torma, etc., all actions and activities, once the suchness of the mind is realized, everything is certainly gathered by this. Thus it is said. In order to realize true wisdom, if one does not have the instructions of Mahamudra, it is said that it is difficult to realize the ultimate reality, the clear light Mahamudra, by relying solely on the scriptures of Sutra and Tantra (206).
