As it is said in many such statements. Thus, at this time, any kind of other virtuous deeds are sufficient, but especially during the Guru Yoga, generate devotion to the Dharmakaya in the Guru, and earnestly pray to realize the appearances and existence as the Dharmakaya, which is the preliminary. As previously explained, maintain single-pointed concentration (599) in the manner of establishing the essence, and purify the clarity of awareness. Then, without the awareness being distracted and without clinging to this meditation, in a state of vast openness of mind, when subtle thoughts arise in the mind that do not greatly produce pleasure or pain, or intentionally proliferate them, look directly at the essence of their appearance, without grasping or distraction. Similarly, when coarse and obvious thoughts arise in the mind that generate feelings of joy or displeasure, or intentionally proliferate them, repeatedly examine what differences there are in the essence of these two, coarse and subtle. If you can cut off the superimposition, then examine what differences there are between them and the essence of the mind's abiding. Likewise, examine the many kinds of thoughts, such as the eight worldly concerns like pleasure and pain, and the afflictions like desire. Sometimes suppress thoughts, sometimes proliferate them, sometimes just chase after the stream of thoughts, and so on, doing various things, examine the essence of each and cut off superimpositions (600). Similarly, examine external appearances as well. Make various different appearances arise through the doors of forms, such as beautiful and ugly, large and small, colors, shapes, and so on; many categories of sounds, such as pleasant and unpleasant, loud and soft, changes, and so on; various bodily postures, and opening the eyes, smiling, looking right, looking left, and so on. Examine what differences there are between the essence of these and the essence of the mind, separating these objects individually, and cut off superimpositions for several days. The meaning obtained from doing this is that whatever door of arising of thoughts and appearances may arise, there is no need to suppress or stop them. While the appearance is clear, the essence is ungraspable. You need to have a firm conviction in the single, clear emptiness, appearance emptiness, self-awareness. The meaning of this is as previously explained during the introduction to the co-emergent thoughts and appearances. Here also, as the great Brahmin said: All appearances that arise before you (601), Your root is emptiness itself.

Thus practice. Thus it is said. Shawaripa said: Various rivers such as the Ganges, like becoming one taste in the salty sea. Know that all kinds of discriminating minds and mental factors become one taste in the realm of Dharma. Thus it is said. Birwapa said: There is no memory of discrimination, like a river of mirages. Not bound, not liberated, not moved from the original state. Thus it is said. Tailopa said: For example, bag-like clouds rise in the realm of the sky, without going anywhere, and without staying anywhere. Likewise, the clusters of discriminations arising from the mind also rise up the waves of discrimination by seeing one's own mind. Thus it is said. Maitripa said: From the unborn there is sudden discrimination, and that discrimination itself abides in the nature of the realm. Thus it is said. These various appearances are the nature of the mind, not accomplished by mere encounter, but the great seal. Thus it is said. The second (602): What is to be meditated on here is the original face of one's own mind. However, it is not enough to merely fix in the mind the thought and understanding that it is beyond the three characteristics of arising, ceasing, and abiding, and that it is a mind beyond grasping. It is necessary to immediately cut off the additions and subtractions in the form of direct yogic experience. Therefore, as before, in a state of awareness that is not distracted and is relaxed and loose, look straight and clearly at the nature of the meaning of what needs to be meditated on, without distraction or grasping, and look again and again at how it abides. Likewise, look straight at the nature of the consciousness of the meditator. If there is a dualistic appearance between the two, such as each other or inside and outside, then examine it again well by cutting off the additions and subtractions. In short, when it appears that the object of meditation and the meditator are not different and inseparable, but only like a memory-awareness illusion, and when it is understood that the memory-awareness is only a name, but in reality there is nothing to grasp, and there is not even a hair's breadth of a basis, then it is necessary to decide on the original state of emptiness. After cutting off the additions and subtractions in this way, look at what the difference is between the consciousness of the three times in the same way. That is, where did the past mind go? Where did the future mind come from? How does the present mind abide? If the mind of the three times is seen as having the three characteristics of arising, ceasing, and abiding, then the point is not reached, so examine it again well. The face of nature.
