At the time of [practice], is there conceptualization or not? If it is like the first case, then it will not become non-conceptual wisdom. If it is like the second case, is conceptualization merely lacking in one aspect, or is it lacking in all aspects? If it is like the first case, then sleep and becoming a Buddha, etc., also become meditating on non-conceptual wisdom, because it is merely lacking in one aspect of conceptualization. All three realms admit this. If all conceptualization is not needed, then when you meditate on non-conceptual wisdom, do you need to generate the thought "I want to meditate on non-conceptual wisdom" beforehand, or not? If you need to, then that thought itself is conceptualization, so the vow to meditate on non-conceptual wisdom is broken. All three realms admit this. If you don't need to, then all sentient beings in the three realms will arise with meditation, because it arises even without generating the conceptualization of "I want to meditate" beforehand. If you say that this is a chain of the three realms, then you will become as devoid of confidence as if hail had fallen on your head, so it is said. Therefore, know that this is not the reasoning spoken by the great scholar Padmasambhava. If you, the Mudra practitioners, say, "Do not follow the past, do not welcome the future, do not make any modifications to the present awareness, do not conceptualize anything, do not grasp anything, do not attend to anything, leave it, leave it unadorned, leave it relaxed, leave it clear." If you say that (555) these are only the teachings of the Heshang, then it should be said. If that is the case, then in the pith instructions of the Madhyamaka of Lord Dipamkara, it says, "During that time, awareness does not conceptualize anything, does not grasp anything, abandons all memory and attention, and remains in that state until the enemy or thief of signs or conceptualization does not arise." Then what is said also becomes only the teachings of the Heshang. If it is not like that, because that very pith instruction says, "In the relative, all phenomena are made into the object of seeing on this shore, and all establishments such as cause and effect are true as they appear. But in the ultimate or true, the relative as it appears, merely observing and refuting with all the great reasonings, even the measure of a hundredth of a hair cannot be established." It says so, so it must be understood. All phenomena of the relative

If all things are examined and analyzed by reason, they will not be established as any essence. Therefore, it is different to first conduct rational examination and analysis, and finally settle (556) into meditative equipoise. If so, we also conventionally posit all appearances such as cause and effect as true, just as they appear, and also analyze them with the reason that examines ultimate truth. Like this, before settling into meditation, examine with reason the thing called "distracted mind": Is your own mind non-existent or existent? If the former, then how do all these various appearances arise? If the latter, is it outside or inside the body? If the former, in which direction, such as east, is it located? What are its color, shape, size, etc.? Look! If the latter, does it pervade everything from the crown of the head to the soles of the feet, or is it only in some parts? Examine and analyze it well! Like this, when students are made to search for their own minds, just as a mute dreams, or a young woman experiences pleasure but cannot express it, the nature of the mind, which is self-luminous, although it cannot be expressed, (557) will produce something that can be experienced. Therefore, by doing things like not conceptualizing anything, settling into the state of self-awareness and luminosity is the tradition of the Mahamudra practitioners. How can it be said to be the doctrine of the Heshang? They are completely different. Furthermore, when identifying the Mahamudra of one's own tradition, it is said that: Our Mahamudra is the wisdom arising from empowerment, and the self-born wisdom arising from the samadhi of the two stages. This, needless to say, abandons the language of the ground Mahamudra far away, and is not even suitable for the path Mahamudra. Because the attainment of Mahamudra through the generation stage is prohibited by Bodhisattva Vajragarbha and Avalokiteshvara. In the Vajragarbha commentary it says: With conceptualization, the result will also arise with conceptualization. From the seed of the Kuta tree, the fruit of the Shalu will not arise. It also says, from the stainless light, those who accomplish worldly things accomplish [them] with the mandala of conceptualization of forms, etc.
